Primary ballots complete

Monday, February 8, 2016

Putnam County voters will go to the booth for the Tuesday, May 3 with only two contested local races and only a handful coming from any higher level of government.

Both contested races are on the Republican side, with no candidates for local office at all from the Democratic Party.

Incumbent GOP District 3 County Commissioner Don Walton will face a challenge from Cloverdale Town Marshal Mike Clark in the primary.

Likewise, four men will be vying for three GOP nominations for Putnam County Council at large, with incumbents Gene Beck, Phil Gick and Larry Parker and challenger Jim Wright seeking the three seats.

Unopposed local candidates include four incumbents in Putnam Circuit Court Judge Matt Headley, Auditor Lorie Hallett, Coroner Dave Brown and District 1 Commissioner Dave Berry, as well as Kathy Minnick seeking the office of Putnam County Treasurer.

Additional local offices on the GOP ballot are 22 people seeking 11 spots at the State Republican Convention, as well as 2o different unopposed bids for precinct committeemen.

The only contested race for precinct committeeman pits Walton against Daniel Hofman in Cloverdale 3.

Other contested races on the ballot include the nine remaining Republican candidates for U.S. president, although several of those are sure to have dropped out by early May.

The U.S. Senate race to replace Dan Coats is shaping up between Republicans Eric Holcomb, Marlin Stutzman and Todd Young, and in U.S. House District 4, incumbent Todd Rokita has been challenged from within his own party by Kevin Grant.

In State Senate District 24, Pete Miller also faces a challenge inside the party from John Crane.

District 37 Sen. Rodric Bray and District 44 State Rep. Jim Baird are unopposed in the GOP primary.

Gov. Mike Pence will not be opposed in his re-election bid until the fall.

On the Democrat side, no local intrigue exists on the ballot. The only Democrat to file in the local voter registration office was Steve Shotwell, filing to be a delegate at the Democrat State Convention.

Just two contested races exist anywhere on the Democrat ballot, with Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders both seeking the party's nod for president.

The other race is in House District 4, where John Dale and Ryan Farrar are both seeking the nomination.

On a note of local interest, Kim Fidler of Greencastle is seeking the District 44 state representative seat.

The only other two names appearing anywhere on the Democratic ballot will be John Gregg for governor and Baron Hill for U.S. Senate.
