Newlon breaks NCAC record
GRANVILLE, Ohio -- It was a record-setting opening day at the North Coast Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships as DePauw established school records in three events.
DePauw is in third place with 332 points and trails Kenyon which has 622 and Denison with 583.
Angela Newlon led the way for the Tigers as she won the 500-yard freestyle for the second time in three years. In the prelims she broke the NCAC and DePauw records in 4:49.38. She then topped that by winning the event in the finals in 4:48.61.
The Tigers' 200 free relay of Caroline Bridges, Ellen Riehle, Kirsten Olson and Mary Woods turned in an all-NCAC performance by finishing third in a school-record 1:35.01 which also was good for an NCAA "B" cut.
Olson was fifth in the 200 individual medley in 2:07.61, while Annie Graves was 10th in 2:08.51 and Woods 11th in 2:08.85.
Bridges was fifth in the 50 free in an NCAA "B" time of 23.88 seconds, while Riehle was 10th in 24.17 and Erin Horne 18th in 25.15 after going 24.85 in the prelims.
The Tigers' 400 medley relay of Annie Graves, Woods, Newlon and Bridges broke the school record after finishing third in 3:51.37.
Morgan Flowers finished 13th in one-meter diviing with 250.75 points, while Sam Ostreicher was 16th with 198.05.
Friday's prelims start at 10 a.m. with finals slated for 6:30 p.m.
