LINDEN -- For 27 of 32 minutes the Greencastle boys' basketball team outplayed North Montgomery in a non-conference boys' basketball game Friday night. Unfortunately for the Cubs, the first three-and-a-half minutes and the last two-and-a-half minutes of the game were their undoing in a 69-63 road loss dropping Greencastle to 10-12 as they wrapped up the regular season.

"I thought the start of the game was a big factor. Getting down like we did, but I told the kids at halftime that I was really proud how we battled back," Greencastle head coach Troy Greenlee said.

North Montgomery started all five of its seniors on senior night and jumped out to quick 10-2 lead over the first 3:22 of the game. All five starters for the Chargers scored in the first quarter as they hit 9-of-11 shots from the field in the quarter to lead 22-13 at the end of one.

"You have to give North Montgomery credit. It seemed like they hit everything they threw up there tonight," Greenlee said.

Colin York lit up the scoreboard early in the second quarter. The sophomore guard scored 10 of his team-high 21 points in the first two minutes of the second quarter to bring the Tiger Cubs back into the game. Greencastle turned the tables on the Chargers in the second period as they shot 9-of-16 and held North Montgomery to 3-of-11 shooting. Greencastle led 36-35 at the half.

The two teams battled throughout the third quarter to end up tied 53-53. Nick Costin stepped up and provided some offense. He scored six of his 16 points in the period and the stage was set for the final quarter.

"That (Nick Costin's scoring) was a huge part of our success tonight. Colin and Ryan (Coble) are who everyone is focused on. When Nick can step it up like he did tonight, it changes the game for us. He was big tonight," Greenlee said.

The scoring pace dropped in the quarter as both teams battled with neither team able to extend more than a three-point lead until just over a minute to play. North Montgomery was finally able to extend its lead and close the game out over the final two minutes. The Chargers went 8-of-8 from the foul line in the quarter and 16-of-17 from the line for the game, which was a big difference.

"They went 16-of-17 from the foul line and we only got two free throws. This is a tough place to play and we showed we can play with anyone in our sectional," Greenlee said.

Another area that hurt the Tiger Cubs was on the boards. The athletic Chargers outrebounded Greencastle 35-17 on the night leading to numerous second chances.

"Rebounding has been kind of a bugaboo for us all year. Defensively, we weren't as strong as I'd like to be and then when you give them second shots it makes it hard for our offense. We scored enough points to win the game," Greenlee said.

York led the way for the Cubs with 21 points, Coble scored 20 and Costin 16. The Chargers were led by Devon Zachary with 23 points, Caleb Randolph added 18, while Jordan Lewis chipped in 10.

Greencastle will travel to Frankfort next Wednesday to take on Frankfort in the first round of the sectional.
