T.J. Smith

TERRE HAUTE -- A former Putnam County sheriff's deputy and Greencastle City Councilman will be resentenced in federal court on April 15.

T.J. Smith, 39, Greencastle, was released from federal custody in January after serving less than a year of the 14-month sentence he was originally given by Judge William T. Lawrence.

However, an appeals court rejected that sentence in January, calling it too light and mandating that Judge Lawrence resentence Smith.

That hearing will take place at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 15 in the U.S. District Courthouse in Terre Haute.

A federal jury found Smith guilty of two of the four counts of police brutality with which he was charged.

  • It's all fine and good that this man is taking his licks but what about the rest of them that hasn't. I feel like they are making an example out of him. It should have happened well before windows who even failed to comply & still didn't get resentenced (I don't think I have to name names). There's many more that should've had harsher sentencing before him & more following this ordeal. It's not happening. Think about all who's even gotten away with it & more.. You know how they say that you learn from the best. It just a shame!!

  • Where's his mug shot? If it were any other criminal you guys would of printed his mug shot rather that use this fancy portrait. I don't know why you guys are treating this coward with any dignity, he beat up a man in handcuffs!
