Unintended consequences

Thursday, March 10, 2016

To the Editor:

A Jew, a Muslim and a lesbian walk into a restaurant in Indiana. No one gets served because the owner has a "sincerely held religious belief."

Gov. Mike Pence and our Indiana Republican legislators have determined that it is okay to discriminate because of who you are.

How will Gov. Pence react when a Muslim shop owner refuses to serve a woman for not wearing appropriate head covering? What will our legislators have to say when a nurse refuses to supply emergency contraception to a 16-year-old victim of rape? What will Franklin Graham do when a parent lets their child die of an easily curable disease?

Unintended consequences?

It has happened already. The family on the TV reality show "Sister Wives" has filed a lawsuit because the husband cannot be legally married to each of them. Citing RFRA, that infringes on their "sincerely held religious belief" and denies them their religious freedom.

Pandora's box has been opened. Certain legislators are all for religious liberty, as long as you are a Christian and have the same beliefs as the ones they hold.
