Oase S. Johnson, 87, of rural Greencastle, died at 2:35 a.m. March 25, 2016 at Danville Regional Rehabilitation Center.

Born Oct. 17, 1928 in Frankfort, Ind., to the late Buryl and Edith (Hufford) Johnson.

He married Nancy F. Metzger on April 5, 1953, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 5, 2009.

He was a graduate of Jefferson High School.

A veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve and National Guard for more than 40 years serving as part of the 38th Infantry Division.

He attained the rank of lieutenant colonel and received the Army Commendation Medal in 1976.

Oase worked as a printer for Lafayette Journal and Courier, retiring from Indianapolis Star and News in 1991.

He is survived by two sons, Jeffrey (Barbara) Johnson of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Steven Johnson of Avon; one daughter, Nancy Johnson of Indianapolis; a sister, Susan (Hugh) Wallis of Fort Wayne; four grandchildren Benjamin Johnson, Leslie (Geoff) Woodard, Rebecca (Dylon) Rader and Melissa Johnson; great-grandchildren, Ryleigh and Harper Rader, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Candace Sue Johnson, and a son, David Bryan Johnson.

Private family service will be held. Burial with military honors will be in Bunnell Cemetery.

Goodwin Funeral Home, Frankfort, is assisting the family with arrangements.
