Vanity donated to Goodwill with handguns in drawer

Friday, April 1, 2016

A quick Internet search reveals some of the stranger things ever turned in to Goodwill stores -- prosthetic legs, a live grenade, jackets with large amounts of money in the pockets and even an urn with Grandma still in it.

A similarly strange story unfolded at the Greencastle Goodwill earlier this week when workers found handguns in a piece of donated furniture.

As workers were going through the antique vanity, they struggled to open one of its four drawers.

When they finally pried it open, the employees were surprised to find the pair of pistols.

Store officials immediately called police, and Greencastle Police Officer Josh Smith was dispatched to the scene at 2:10 p.m. Wednesday.

Speaking to Goodwill manager Selena Withrow, Smith learned the donor had declined a receipt for the donation.

As he attempted to locate the donor, Smith also ran background checks on the weapons -- a Taurus .357 magnum and a Chiappa Firearms 1911 .22 caliber.

While police discovered nothing nefarious about the guns or their origin, they also did not learn the identity of the owners for another day.

Around 6 p.m. on Thursday, a Greencastle woman contacted GPD asking for Officer Smith in reference to the guns found at Goodwill.

The woman, whose name is not being released since she is accused of no crime, said she and her boyfriend were putting up drywall and placed the guns in the drawer to protect them from dust.

They subsequently donated the vanity to Goodwill, forgetting about the firearms inside.

The woman was told to contact Detective Capt. Randy Seipel about getting the handguns returned, as they had already been entered into evidence.

There are no criminal charges linked to this incident.
