The Putnam County Sheriff's Department recently honored a veteran officer for his part in saving a life in northern Putnam County.

On March 31, Sheriff Scott Stockton presented Capt. Danny Wallace, with a lifesaving award.

On Feb. 2, Capt. Wallace and Sgt. Gregg Slover assisted Roachdale Marshal Mike Mahoy regarding a suicidal subject.

Mahoy initially received a call from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department to check a residence located in Putnam County for a person who was reported by family members as being suicidal. Mahoy contacted Putnam County 911 Dispatch and with the assistance of Wallace and Slover, the victim was found unconscious in a vehicle that was parked and running concealed behind a barn.

The vehicle had a hose attached to the exhaust pipe running through the trunk and through the backseat, flooding the passenger compartment with deadly carbon monoxide fumes.

Slover immediately broke out the side window, where officers pulled the victim from the car. The victim was then revived to consciousness who was then transported to the hospital for evaluation.

Sheriff Stockton praised the quick action of Wallace, Slover and Mahoy in their efforts to locate the individual and to swiftly act to save a citizen in need.

The sheriff noted the willingness of all law enforcement officers in Putnam County to work together for the common goal of public service.

Capt. Wallace is a 29-year veteran of the Putnam County Sheriff's Department.
