CHS wins double header at Wolverines

SWITZ CITY-- Cloverdale's softball team picked up its first and second wins Saturday against White River Valley after a tie and a loss to county rival South Putnam. The first game saw Lauren Meek pitch seven innings with the Clovers taking the victory 11-3. The second game CHS won in five innings 13-2.

Each game saw big hits from Kimmy Winders. The senior recorded three RBIs in the first game off a double and two singles. Kelsey Helterbrand was also good at the plate, netting three singles.

CHS was scoreless through the first three innings before getting into the groove later in the game.

The Clovers scored three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth. By this time CHS had already built a 6-3 lead. The Wolverines scored one in the second and two in the fourth, but that was all Cloverdale allowed in the first game.

Meek pitched to six strikeouts and no walks. Cloverdale saved its best for the last inning putting up five runs in the seventh and final inning.

"We were a little better today than in our first two outings," Clover coach Jim Spencer said. "Everybody improved a little bit in all phases of the game and it added up to a more solid performance."

The second game was more lopsided in favor of the Lady Clovers. Still hot from the first win CHS got things started at the plate early recording four in the first innings and five in the fifth.

CHS scored four more runs in the fourth for the its final tally of 13 runs. White River Valley scored two in the first inning and no more after that.

"We just have to continue to get better as the season progresses to stay competitive with the teams on our schedule," Spencer said.

Winders continued her big day, recording two RBIs via two singles and a homer. Helterbrand, Kiley Shedron and Skyler Price each hit two singles while Meek improved to 2-1 on the season.

The Clovers (2-1-1) will now look forward to playing at Monrovia on Monday and at Brown County on Tuesday.
