Cougar softball falls at home

Thursday, April 14, 2016

The Edgewood Mustangs visited North Putnam on Wednesday night in Western Indiana Conference Girl's Softball. The two teams had played at Edgewood the night before with the Mustangs winning 15-5 at their home field. The Cougars had revenge on their mind, but fell just short. It took two extra innings for the Mustangs to defeat North 10-7.

"We played a lot sounder game tonight. We game them some extra at bats, but nothing glaring. I was pleased how we came back tonight against the same team that beat us the night before," North Putnam head coach Jim Hess said.

The Cougars struck scored early as Skylar Clifford scored on a dropped pop-up to give the Cougars an early 1-0 lead. The Mustangs rallied by adding two runs in the third inning, but North countered again by adding two more runs in the third.

The two teams were tied at 3-3 entering the seventh inning. A defensive game up to that point was shattered as both teams scored four runs in their half of the seventh inning.

After allowing the Mustangs to take a 7-3 lead in the top half of the seventh, then Cougars showed some resiliency. Reilly Tucker singled and stole second on an attempted pickoff. Clifford singled, then with two outs Mia Runnells singled and Jada Stump ripped a two-run double. That closed the lead to 7-6. Sierra Spencer singled driving in the tying run sending the game to extra innings.

"We came back with four runs after giving up four. A lot of it with two outs in the seventh. We were just tough tonight. I told the team after the game that they were tough this time out," Hess said.

The two teams were scoreless in the first extra inning, then Edgewood plated three runs in the ninth. This time North couldn't match it. The Cougars stranded two runners in their final at bat to establish the final score of 10-7.

Chloe LaPierre, Tucker, and Stump all had multi-hit games for the Cougars. LaPierre, Stump and Runnells picked up extra base hits to lead North offensively. Tucker pitched the first five innings, then came back again for the eighth and ninth innings for the Cougars.

"Reilly did a good job tonight. She had to come back in after pitching five innings for two more. Jada Stump had a really good game at the plate and behind the plate," Hess said.

The Cougars who fell to 1-3 on the season will try and pick up another win tonight (Thursday) as they travel to Rockville for a non-conference game. The Cougars will also play in the Putnam County Softball Tournament on Saturday.
