Clema Jean Shonkwiler Perkins

Clema Jean Shonkwiler Perkins, 86, of Roachdale, passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2016.

She was born on Feb. 23, 1930 in Putnam County to Estel and Mary Elizabeth Hood Shonkwiler.

Clema was a 1948 graduate of Greencastle High School.

She was a member of Roachdale Presbyterian Church and attended First United Methodist Church in Eustis, Fla.

Clema was an active member of the Roachdale Town and Country Homemakers Club; a member of the Past Presidents of Putnam County Homemakers; a member of the Order of the Eastern Star; and a lifetime member of International Wood Collector's Society, along with her husband Bill.

Clema was a co-founder and lifetime membership honoree of the Bainbridge Saddle Club, and had received the 1994 Putnam County Fair, Spirit of the Fair Award with her husband Bill.

Clema was an avid quilter, accomplished seamstress, and won multiple awards for her culinary skills. Most of all she enjoyed traveling with her husband, and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister-in-law, Norma Shonkwiler; a brother, Marshal Shonkwiler; and three brothers-in-law, Glenn Scaggs, Harold Alcorn and James Wood "Woody" Porter.

Surviving are her husband, William Hayden Perkins, whom she married on Nov. 7, 1948; two daughters, Nancy Kay Thomson and husband Mark of Sherman, Texas, Anita Jean Custis and husband Jerry of Fillmore, and William Estel Perkins and wife Debra of Roachdale; siblings Malcolm Shonkwiler, Loisdene Reeves and husband William; Joan Alcorn, Roberta Scaggs; and a brother-in-law, Robert Perkins and wife Betty; a sister-in-law, Mary Shonkwiler; eight grandchildren, Matthew Leon Thompson, Jamie Sue Custis Smith and husband Larry, Katherine Irene Thomson, Jean Ann Custis Neese and husband Wesley, William Charles Perkins and wife Rebecca, John Robert Custis and wife Bethany, Jennifer Brooke Perkins Griffin and husband Brent, and Jay Adam Custis and wife Rebecca; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 19 at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Pastor Bruce Adamson officiating. Interment will follow at Union Chapel Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Monday, April 18, 2016 from 4 to 8 P.M. at the funeral home.
