On a day where the bats were swinging and connecting for the Eagle baseball team the grounders just weren't finding any gaps in the infield as South Putnam fell at home to Covenant Christian 3-1.

"We executed everything exactly the way we wanted to," Eagle coach Zach Love said. "We put the ball into play. Our pitchers pitched well. The only thing I didn't like was the score at the end of the game."

Pitching for the Eagles was Daniel Grundlock who started the game with two scoreless innings. The Eagles were able to get out of the second inning with bases loaded by stepping on home plate three times.

Two home runs by the Warriors broke the stalemate in the third and South Putnam followed up with a run of its own.

Josh Stewart hit one of the few balls that found the gap between the third baseman and shortstop, which scored Hunter Higgins from third.

"We just have to keep battling through this adversity and realize that eventually, some of those hits that are going right at people are going to find gaps," Love said. "We are going to end up break through here once we get a couple breaks with the little stuff like that."

With a 2-3 record and an early WIC division win against South Vermillion on Tuesday the Eagles are in a good position as they head into the Putnam County Tournament this weekend. SPHS has some depth at pitching and in a low-scoring game like it was Thursday, pitching could be an advantage for South Putnam in the conference.

"Daniel Grundlock and Kody Britton both threw well," Love said. "We have an excellent pitching coach in Logan Grzesiek. He and I have been working with pitchers all throughout the winter. He called an excellent game back there in the dugout. He does a fantastic job setting up our pitching staff to be quite deep. We are looking forward to having the opportunity to continue to utilize that depth."

South Putnam will play Cloverdale first in the County Tournament.
