BAINBRIDGE -- A collision involving two vehicles on U.S. 231 North saw seven patients sent to area hospitals Friday afternoon.

Three, more serious injuries were reported with those transported to Hendricks Regional Health in Danville and four sent to Putnam County Hospital.

"I think their saving grace was that the impact occurred far enough to the rear of the vehicle," Simmons continued. "If it had been a side impact, there would have been extreme injuries -- or worse."

The Putnam County Sheriff's Department (PCSD) was the lone authority on the scene as the accident took place five miles north of Greencastle at the area's well-known "Shortcut Road."

Organizations responding to the scene other than PCSD included the Bainbridge Fire Department, Putnam County Operation Life, PMH Ambulance of Roachdale and Kenny's Auto Service and Towing of Bainbridge.

"Surely, the way the vehicle was sitting, it spun a couple of times," said Deputy Virgil Lanning.

"Everyone was coherent and talking when we arrived on the scene," newly-added Deputy Elizabeth Campbell added.

Debris, including glass, personal items and fluids, littered the roadway as workers from Kenny's Auto collected the vehicles.

PCSD, who first received the dispatch at 2:29 p.m., cleared the scene at approximately 3:30 p.m. and traffic resumed as normal.

  • Is the part of the highway being more heavily traveled as a result of all of the road construction?

  • As someone who used to use this road extensively some years ago, the increased amount of traffic flow involved on 231 now makes for a very dangerous turn. Especially for those attempting to turn towards town with the amount of semi traffic on this road. Perhaps a full stop-light with a protected left is in order now given how often it is used as a short-cut to Greencastle.

  • There have been accidents at that spot that have resulted in death. And many others as well. We continuously see people passing in the "no passing zone" when we are going south and turning west into 500 no. I don't think that was the case this time, but none the less, this is a dangerous crossroads. Maybe some more police patrol or caution lights would help.

  • I was the driver of the black car. I would like to correct some information about this wreck. The green car was north bound on 231 turning west onto 500. They turned in front of me as you can clearly see I hit the passenger side of the car. If they were facing east the damage would of been on the drivers side.

  • 3 days later and still no word on who was in the cars involved in the accident?

  • I was the driver of the black Nissan and had my 3 children in the car. I called the banner graphic and gave them my name and phone number and also gave them the correct information about the accident on Saturday when I seen the newspaper. I have not received a call back from them nor have they corrected the article. I went and got a copy of the police report this morning which clearly stated I was south bound on 231 and other driver was north bound on 231. The other driver pulled out in front of me turning west onto 500. I attempted to stop but there was not enough time to and hit the passenger side of the green car.
