County tennis teams both earn tough wins

The South Putnam girls' tennis team responded to its loss to Greencastle with a win at Turkey Run Wednesday. The doubles swept the Warriors with the No. 1 doubles team of Allison Bunton and Meredith Trump winning 6-0, and 4-6 and the No. 2 doubles team of Kaylee Hubbard and Alicia Haywood winning 6-2 and 6-3.

Adie Clifford and Alex Lesko at the No. 3 and No. 2 singles for the Eagles both played tough matches against their Warrior counterparts but fell.

Lesko lost 6-4, 7-5 and Clifford won the first game 6-2 then fell 6-3 and 6-4 in the next two.

Lena Rutz took it to her Turkey Run opponent winming both matches 6-0.

"I'm proud of the way the girls bounced back from a tough loss," John Briones said. "One singles played with confidence and played an excellent mental game. One and Two doubles communicated very well and battled through adversity. Two and three singles were both evenly matched and some close games all the way. Proud of the way they competed throughout the match and never gave up. JV players stepped their game up and played really well."

The JV squad tied with Turkey Run 2-2. South Putnam's next match is at the West Vigo Initational on Saturday before facing West Vigo at home on Monday.

The Greencastle girls' tennis team took down West Vigo in a decisive match Thursday. The Tiger Cubs swept the Vikings 5-0.

"I am really proud of the girls and thought they played great tonight," GHS coach Kevin Rowe said. "We have high expectations this season and continue to get better after each match."

No. 1 singles player Bailer Zapp won 6-3, 7-5, Rachel Chadd won 6-1, 6-3 in the No 2. singles slot and Madison Trout won two games both 6-2. in the No. 3 singles game.

Lydia Trout and Lily Spencer won 6-2,6-1 in the No. 1 doubles match and the No. 2 doubles team of Nicole Newgent and Madeline Graham won 6-3, 6-0.

Greencastle's next match will be on Monday at WIC West Division rival Northview.
