BAINBRIDGE -- Multiple local emergency agencies responded to a crash with multiple injuries Monday afternoon involving an ATV and a passenger car.

The crash occurred around 4 p.m. when John English, of English's Buffalo Farm, pulled out of his driveway to head north on U.S. 231 in a Polaris Ranger with his two minor granddaughters. Rachel Jern, 47, Terre Haute, was headed south in a 1996 Nissan Maxima and couldn't stop in time to avoid the collision

John and his two minor granddaughters suffered head injuries. John was airlifted to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, the elder granddaughter was taken by ambulance to Riley Hospital in Indianapolis while the younger was airlifted to Riley Hospital as well.

Jern suffered a laceration to her arm and bruising to her chest, but declined medical treatment or transportation.

Traffic in both directions was completely stalled for several miles during the accident, but was moving again after 4:50 p.m.

The accident was investigated by Capt. Danny Wallace of the Putnam County Sheriff's Department. The Sheriff's Department was assisted by the Indiana State Police, the Bainbridge marshal and the Department of Natural Resources.

HIPAA laws prevented inquiries into the state of John English and his granddaughters.

This article has been corrected to say that the two minors were English's granddaughters.
