Tiger Cub golfers win pair

Friday, April 29, 2016

Greencastle got a 37 from medalist Jake Bennett to help record a 160-187 win over Cloverdale on Thursday in boys' high school golf action at Windy Hill.

Jake Buis added a 38 for the Tiger Cubs, while Zach Nichols paced Cloverdale with a 45.

"Both Jake Bennett and Jake Buis had excellent scores on a very wet course that made the course play long," Greencastle coach Steve Paquin said. "Jaxon Parmley continues to lower his scores and count in the scoring column.

"Our scores are becoming more consistent and getting lower, and I'm seeing improvement in decision-making and in shot-making."

Cloverdale coach Doug Wokoun is still waiting for his team to live up to its potential.

"Greencastle played an excellent round," he said. "We just don't have an answer right now. The same problems that we have had continue, and we have not been able to solve them."

Wokoun felt his team got a "decent" round from Nichols.

"We were marginally better than last Monday, but weather prevented us from making any improvements since," he said. "Our guys have just got to rededicate themselves to being the kind of players we expected them to be."

Tiger Cubs win at home

On Wednesday, Greencastle survived the unfavorable weather conditions and played what coach Paquin termed the team's "most consistent nine-hole score of the year" in defeating Tri-West 162-188 at Windy Hill.

"Jake Buis was consistent in ball striking and putting," Paquin noted. "Jaxon Parmley had his lowest score of the season [and a very good score for a freshman] with a 42."

The match was Greencastle's first at home this season.

"It was good playing on familiar ground," Paquin said. "We had a very good practice Tuesday and the results were evident in our play.

"We should continue to improve and lower our scores as the season progresses."

Greencastle (162) - Jake Buis 37, Jake Bennett 41, Blaise Hasty 42, Jaxon Parmley 42, Jonah Stevens 46, Josh Bomgardner 59.

Many Eagles get bests in defeat

A deeper Monrovia girls track squad defeated South Putnam 99-31 on Thursday evening, but coach Brandon Welti still drew several positives from the event.

"Despite knowing we were outmatched in depth, everyone worked hard and focused on earning personal bests," he said. "Overall, the girls' team had a good effort and stayed positive all night."

Among the standouts were Cailtin Capps with a personal record in shot put, Grace Taylor with a victory in the discus (narrowly defeating Capps) and Lois Cheatham with a PR in the high jump included among her heavy workload of four events.

Welti noted that many girls were running different events than usual.

Julianna DeLano, normally a 3,200-meter runner, finished second in the 400-meter dash. Blaze Bottorff won the 100-meter dash and placed second in the 300-meter hurdles.
