Several WIC, Putnam county titles on the line this week

This week is a huge one for both Western Indiana Conference post-season action and the Putnam County golf tournament, the final leg of the intra-county series.

Following is a sport-by-sport look at each sport, and where it stands in terms of conference and county tourney competition:

Baseball

* WIC -- The conference "crossover" playoff games will take place on Friday at the site of the East Division schools, pairing equally-finishing teams from each division against each other.

Edgewood has wrapped up the East Division title with a 5-0 record, while West Vigo is 4-0 to lead the West Division and can finish a perfect WIC season by winning on Tuesday at Sullivan.

North Putnam and Owen Valley play on Tuesday, with the winner being the No. 2 seed from the East and the loser being the No. 3 seed.

Cloverdale will host the 11th-place game on Friday against the loser of Tuesday's South Vermillion-Greencastle game.

In the West Division, South Putnam is 2-2 and can hold onto fourth with a win at Northview on Tuesday.

* County -- North Putnam won the county tournament played last month, defeating Greencastle 2-1 in the semifinals and South Putnam 2-0 in the finals.

South Putnam defeated Cloverdale 5-4 in the other semifinal matchup.

Golf

* WIC -- The conference meet will be played at Idle Creek in Terre Haute on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m.

* County -- The Putnam County meet will be played on Thursday at Clover Meadows, starting at 4:30 p.m.

Softball

* WIC -- The conference "crossover" games will also be played on Friday at the site of the East Division schools.

Cascade won the East Division with a perfect 5-0 record, and will host the championship game against either Northview or West Vigo.

Both of those teams have 3-1 records, but Northview would hold the tiebreaker based upon the Knights' 7-4 win over West Vigo last month.

Northview's only loss came 13-12 to Sullivan.

* County -- Cloverdale won the Putnam County tourney last month, defeating South Putnam 13-1 in the semifinals and Greencastle 11-0 in the championship game. Greencastle defeated North Putnam 4-1 in the other semifinal game.

Tennis

* WIC -- Greencastle played Owen Valley on Friday in a WIC crossover match for third and fourth place. No results were available.

* County -- Greencastle defeated South Putnam 5-0 earlier this year in what would be considered the Putnam County championship.

Track and field

* WIC -- The girls' conference meet will be on Tuesday at Edgewood, starting at 5:30 p.m., while the boys' competition will be at Northview on Thursday.

* County -- Greencastle swept both the boys' and girls' county meets last week.
