County Jail

Two people were booked in the Putnam County Jail on Thursday.

* At 1:10 p.m. Donald Dale Smith, 41, Greencastle, was housed at the jail for domestic battery.

* At 1:40 p.m. Brandi Christine Marshall, 34, Bloomfield, was taken into custody on a warrant.

City Police

One recent arrest was reported by Greencastle City Police officers.

* At 7:37 p.m. Wednesday, Johnnie Marsden Jr., 37, Greencastle, was arrested by Capt. Charles Inman at Putnam Plaza outside the Great China Buffet restaurant.

Lodged in the Putnam County Jail, Marsden is facing charges of battery, disorderly conduct and public intoxication. Under blood-alcohol testing, he registered .211 percent.

* At 4:27 p.m. Thursday, a one-vehicle accident was reported on the parking lot at the Walmart supercenter on State Road 240.

Jodi Buis, 20, Greencastle, was driving through the east side of the lot in a 2002 Ford Taurus when her attention was distracted by the presence of another vehicle as she turned left, and her car struck a concrete post.

The airbags deployed on her car and Buis complained of neck and shoulder pain, Officer Nick Eastham reported.

Operation Life ambulance responded but Buis declined medical treatment.

Damage was estimated at $2,500-$5,000.

One recent traffic citation was issued by Greencastle officers.

* At 11:10 p.m. Monday, Sandra Bortkewicz, 53, Roachdale, was ticketed by Officer Brad Hiatt.

Stopped on Shadowlawn Avenue, she was cited for having an expired license plate.

Sheriff's Department

Putnam County Sheriff's Department deputies responded to seven recent property-damage accidents.

* At 1:57 a.m. on Thursday, Crystal L. Matthews, 33, Roachdale, was northbound on U.S. 231 near County Road 1000 North in a 2002 Honda Odyssey when she hit a deer.

Deputy Matt Biggs estimated damage at $5,001-$10,000.

* At 9:41 p.m. on Tuesday, Myna Y. Hernandez, 43, Plainfield, was eastbound on U.S. 40 near County Road 475 East in a 2015 Hyundai when she hit a deer.

Deputy Riley Houghton estimated damage at $2,501-$5,000.

* At 7:38 a.m. on Monday, Corbin G. Cromwell, 23, Fillmore, was southbound on Public Road in Russellville, approaching Railroad Street in a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche. Robert T. Poynter Jr., 31, Greencastle, was eastbound on Railroad Street approaching the same intersection in a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado.

Cromwell was required to stop at the intersection and Poynter was not. Cromwell told Deputy Scott Ducker he looked down to light a cigarette and as he looked up he entered the intersection, not seeing Poynter's vehicle.

Poynter said he saw Cromwell fail to stop and enter the intersection.

The vehicles collied and ended up on the east side of the intersection.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000. Poynter's vehicle was towed.

Cromwell's vehicle was not insured.

* At 6:40 a.m. on Monday, Andrew J. Harris, 27, Coatesville, was westbound on Right-of-Way Road in a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer.

He told Capt. Tom Helmer he crested a hill and saw three deer running into his path of travel. He could not avoid hitting one of them.

The vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

* At 5:20 p.m. on Sunday, Keven J. Porten, 16, Avon, was westbound on County Road 450 South just east of County Road 1000 East in a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt.

Porten told Deputy Jacob Harrington he hit a bump and lost control. The car went into a field on the north side, rolling once before coming to rest upright.

Porten was uninjured.

The vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

Deputy Biggs assisted Harrington at the scene.

* At 9:10 p.m. on Friday, May 6, Christy L. Cash, 44, Greencastle, was westbound on State Road 240 just west of County Road 500 East in a 2016 Ford Explorer when she hit a deer.

Deputy Biggs estimated damage at $1,001-$2,500.

* At 8:22 p.m. on Friday, May 6, Michael E. Schicker, 35, Fillmore, was northbound on County Road 775 East approaching County Road 350 North in a 1998 Ford Escort.

Schicker told Deputy Biggs a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction ran him off the roadway, where it hit an embankment and a fence.

The vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department recently responded to two dispatches and two medical runs.

* At 7:47 a.m. on Wednesday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 800 S. College Ave. No fire or smoke was visible upon arrival. GFD determined the alarm to have been set off unnecessarily by steam from a shower. GFD cleared the scene and returned to station at 7:52 a.m.

* At 5:11 p.m. on Wednesday, GFD performed an odor investigation at 102 Ballard Ln., finding a small gas leak in the building's gas line after detecting a faint smell of natural gas. GFD monitored the situation and advised the resident to contact a plumber to fix the issue. GFD then returned to station at 6:04 p.m.
