Track teams hope WIC proves helpful with sectionals upcoming

Monday, May 16, 2016
Aubrey Barker of Greencastle placed second in the long jump in the WIC meet last week.

Putnam County's high schools competed in the first track meets of the 12-team Western Indiana Conference last week, an event postponed numerous times due to weather but finally completed on Friday at Northview High School.

The teams were not only working to compete against many bigger schools, but also to prepare for this week's sectional meets -- which will include some even bigger schools.

Both sectionals will be at Terre Haute North, with the girls competing on Tuesday and the boys on Thursday.

In the conference meet, Greencastle's girls rode a strong performance from freshman Emma Wilson to place second overall behind Brown County.

Wilson set meet records in both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, and also ran on the winning 4x400 relay team along with Seelye Stoffregen, Corrie Romer and Rose Lemier-Maurichitch.

Cloverdale's Samantha Atwood won the pole vault for the only other county title.

North Putnam finished ninth in the team totals, followed by Cloverdale in 10th and South Putnam in 11th.

In the boys' conference meet, Cloverdale had the highest team finish at seventh place. South Putnam was three points behind in eighth, while Greencastle was 10th and North Putnam was 12th.

Conference champs were South Putnam's Kieffer Vittetow in the 3,200 and Greencastle's J.T. Matthews in the high jump and Elijah Williams in the pole vault.

Here is a school-by-school recap of the conference meet, and preview of the upcoming sectional:

Greencastle

Coach Garry Anderson felt the depth of the girls' team, with at least two scorers in some events, helped his team to finish in second place.

"This enabled them to score big and nearly pull off the win," he said.

Anderson noted that Stoffregen, a freshman, competed in four events and was able to place in all four.

Stoffregen was the anchor leg of the winning 4x400 relay team, which had a season-best time of 4:15.38.

Other highlights included senior Rose Lemier-Maurichitch, who competed in three events and placed in all three -- the 100, 200 and the 4x400 relay.

Freshman Jada Amis placed in both throws, and her discus distance of 90-4 was a new personal best.

"We were so close to placing two girls in each of the hurdle races but fell a bit short," he said, noting that Stoffregen and Erin Thomas placed fifth and sixth in the 100 hurdles, while Stoffregen placed second in the 300 hurdles.

For the Tiger Cub boys, junior Joe January placed third in the discus with a new season-best throw of 136-9.

Anderson thinks his teams can do well in the sectionals this week.

"We can improve on several areas for the sectionals," he said of the girls' team. "We will have two throwers for that meet, our complete distance group and our complete group of jumpers. Hopefully we will improve on our times in all three relays and advance them to the regional."

He is also hopeful for the boys' team.

"I think we can get several to advance to the regionals," he said. "I know the throwers and jumpers seem to be ready, and hopefully we can improve on some of our times to get some runners to the regional also."

South Putnam

Brandon Welti admitted the conference was "a pretty rough night overall" for his girls' team.

"The competition is solid and our lack of depth made it very difficult to compete," he said. "Our 4x800 relay team did well on day two of conference, and we know they are capable of running even better."

Welti thought Ally NIchols had a good race in the 800, and is hopeful of making the top five in the sectional.

"Caitlin Capps had a great night in discus, and we're hoping she'll be able to get into the 90s at sectional," he said. "Overall, we're hoping the team will be able to arrive at sectional refocused and mentally and physically prepared."

Eagles' boys' coach Nathan Aker thought his team had a good night in the conference meet, and he was proud of its effort.

"We had several guys who were able to set new personal records which is what you look for at this time of the year," he said.

Among those were Connor Cain in the 110 hurdles, Dru Bottorff in the 1,600, Cain and Jonah Sanders in the 300 hurdles, Lorenzo Mainetti and Austin Rumley in the 800 and Timmy Parker in the 200.

Vittetow also cut 15 seconds off his previous best time in winning the 3,200.

"In order to place higher in a meet like this, we needed to score more points in the sprints and jumps," he said. "Despite not having done so, we improved our standing among the county schools which I know was a goal for our young men."

Aker thought the atmosphere at the WIC meet was outstanding.

"With 12 teams, the competition was top notch and I believe that it will prepare us for the sectional," he said. He considers the 800 relay team, pole vaulter Jacob Lorimer, and thrower Joe Masters are among those with the best chance to advance.

Vittetow is also high on that list.

"He has had an excellent year and will defend his WIC 3,200 win in the sectional while looking to advance in the tournament," Aker said. "He ran a great race the other night, biding his time and making his move at the right time to win his race."

Cloverdale

Andy Tyler of Cloverdale thought both of his school's teams performed well at the conference meet, with several personal bests also being set.

Among those were Tyler Kaeff in the 110 hurdles and Rylan Hall in the 3,200.

"Blake Willis vaulted 12 feet, and he has been shooting for that height for some time now," Tyler said. "Page Plamondon had a great time in the prelims of the 100 hurdles.

"It was also good to see Evan Monnett running again in a big meet, and we were happy to see Samantha Atwood win pole vault," Tyler added. "We are looking forward to the sectional."

North Putnam

Cougar girls' coach Kevin Lutes knew that moving into a bigger conference would present a new level of competition, which he said was evident.

"I think it was an eye-opening experience for many of our younger girls," Lutes said. "I was glad to see Emily O'Neal make it to the finals in the 100, and Adri Millican and Emily Gasho move on to the finals in shot put.

"With so many young girls and having the conference meet under our belts, I look forward to Tuesday's sectional competition."

Cougar boys' coach Greg Barrett got sixth-place performances from Ethan Christy in the 400 and Gage Bell in the 100 and 200, and the Cougars also placed sixth in the 4x100 relay.

"I thought we competed, but just did not get the outcome on some events we were wanting," he said. "There is room for improvement, and it was a great meet to prepare us for sectionals."
