Clover golfers pick up big triangular win at Turkey Run

Wednesday, May 18, 2016

Cloverdale's boys' golf team bounced back from a tough loss on Monday to defeat Rockville and Turkey Run on Tuesday in a three-way match at the Turkey Run Golf Club.

The Clovers finished with a team score of 189, to defeat the Rox (204) and the Warriors (217).

Kylar Galloway of Cloverdale was the medalist with a 42, with Chase Snyder shooting a 45 for the second-best score.

"Chase was sailing along but ran into difficulty on two holes that drove his score up," Clover coach Doug Wokoun said. "Kylar is starting to get things back together, but he had one crazy hole as well. They are continuing to work and lead, and they are setting the pace for our group."

Wokoun thought Zach Nichols and Drew Boyette also had one bad hole which hurt their scores.

"Those nights that we don't have some glitch on just a hole or two, we are very competitive, but the nights we only have six or seven good holes are just killing our scores," he said. "We will just keep plugging away and trying to eliminate those one or two holes that are preventing our best efforts. Every night enough encouraging things are happening to give us optimism. I still think this team can break through as do some amazing things."

Cloverdale (189) -- Kylar Galloway 42, Chase Snyder 45, Zach NIchols 50, Drew Boyette 52, Zarek Wellington 53, Jason Miller 55

Rockville (204) -- Kyle Goetz 47, Ethan Spence 48, Wesley Cottrell 53, Clay Butler 56, Hunter Allee 58, Trevor Mace 59

Turkey Run (217) -- Tanner Newcomb 49, Christian Johnson 55, Ethan Aubrey 59, Austin Hartman 62, Dakota Eldridge 70, John Brook 73

* Cascade 157, Cloverdale 192 -- The Clovers got a 43 from Chase Snyder on Monday but were defeated by the Cadets.

"[Jackson] Franchville and [Garrett] Compliment [of Cascade] had great rounds," Cloverdale coach Doug Wokoun said. "We competed with everyone else pretty well, but had no answer for those two. They are really good golfers, so their scores were not a surprise, but we didn't get ourselves in a position to compete."

Wokoun thought Snyder had a "decent" round, and was glad that Zach Nichols (who shot a 44) is "starting to get things back together" for the Clovers.

"Our other players struggled with course management and our putting was not very good," Wokoun said. "The same things that have been a problem are continuing to stand in the way of progress."
