Wilson runs away with pair of titles

Afterward, Wilson (below, right) stands by, apparently nonplussed, with her opponents doubled over in exhaustion. The freshman won also won the 1,600, advancing to the IHSAA State Finals in both events.

Freshman advances to state in 2 events, sets meet record

BLOOMINGTON -- The scene around the finish line of the 3,200-meter run at the Bloomington North girls' track and field regional on Tuesday evening said it all.

Emma Wilson was standing in the middle of the track moments after shattering the regional meet record with a time of 10:50.55, incredibly not breathing particularly heavy despite winning her second regional title within the previous hour.

The other competitors were all bent over with their hands on their knees, looking like they were preparing to vomit.

Wilson looked like she was ready to go right away in the 6,400-meter run, if such a thing existed.

Coach Garry Anderson wasn't surprised.

"She did a fine job, and the cool temperatures helped tremendously," he said. "She's been strong all year long and she's just had an outstanding year. She's always trying to do her very best, and I'm sure this was in her mind to qualify for the state in both events."

Anderson holds her accomplishments in high regard.

"For anybody, boy or girl, going to the state championship is really special," he said. "I don't know of anybody from Greencastle who has gone to the state in both of these events. Some of them probably could have, but might have focused on the 800 and the 1,600 or one of the relays."

Wilson won the 1,600 meters by a narrower margin, defeating Grace Williams of Bloomington North by just 7.94 seconds.

The two were running evenly through the first three laps, and Wilson kicked into a higher gear to start the "bell lap" and broke open a close race.

"She's the best runner I've been up against this year," Wilson said afterward. "That was the plan [to stay with her early and pull away late]. I think it went pretty well, but my time isn't what I wanted it to be."

Wilson was about 30 minutes away from running again in the 3,200, but didn't feel badly.

"I'm a little tired, but I feel OK," she said, planning to just drink water between races. "I'm excited, and I think I have enough left for the 3,200."

Emma Wilson

She definitely did.

Besides Wilson, the Tiger Cubs also qualified for the state finals with a third-place finish in the 4x400 relay.

The quartet of Rose Lemier-Maurichitch, Allison White, Bailey Shuee and Seelye Stoffregen turned in a time of 4:09.81 that was just 3.04 seconds behind first-place Jeffersonville.

The Tiger Cubs finished in seventh place in the team standings with 32 points, trailing just the two Bloomington schools, the two Terre Haute schools, Jeffersonville and Springs Valley.

"We had some disappointments," Anderson admitted. "Some of our freshmen didn't run as well as we had hoped. They were a little scared and a little intimidated, and that's natural. There's some fine talent here.

"We have a young team," he continued. "Those freshmen have a lot of years left."

North Putnam got a sixth-place performance from freshman Emily Gasho in the discus. Gasho broke the school record by four feet in the first flight of competition to make it to the finals.

"I'm very proud of how Emily performed tonight," NP coach Kevin Lutes said. "She wasn't thrilled with how the finals went, but that's due more to her competitive nature. She wants to work harder next year to advance to state."

Lutes was also pleased with the performance of his 4x100 relay team, which consisted of junior Sarah Fry, sophomore Emily O'Neal, junior Aleah Duncan and freshman Kayla Pace.

The relay team was a late addition to the regional field.

"Our 4x100 team finished where they were seeded, so I was proud of them as well," Lutes said. "They have worked really hard all year. With no seniors, we look forward to more success next year."

South Putnam's 4x800 relay team of Ally Nichols, Maddie McHugh, Rachel Jones and Julianna DeLano scored points for the Eagles with a seventh-place finish.

Wilson and the Tiger Cub 4x400 relay team will return to Bloomington on June 3 to compete in the state finals at Indiana University's Robert C. Hough Track and Field Complex.
