CAYUGA -- North Putnam High School graduate Dan Nelson has been named superintendent of the North Vermillion School Corporation.

Currently principal of Seeger Memorial High School, Nelson will take over as the new superintendent effective July 1.

He is the son of Linda Nelson, retired former food service director for Greencastle Schools, and husband Robert of Russellville.

Nelson has served as principal of Seeger since 2007 and was selected as the 2015 Indiana Association of School Principals District 4 Principal of the Year and as a mentor with the Indiana Principals Leadership Institute.

He also led Seeger from a Department of Education Accountability grade of "F" in 2010 to an "A" in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Prior to his tenure at Seeger, Nelson served as assistant middle school principal at South Newton in 2005-06 and then as South Newton High School principal in 2006-07.

He began his teaching and coaching career at Seeger in 1990 as a science and social studies teacher, coaching football and basketball for the Patriots.

Nelson is a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Indiana National Guard for 10 years after his discharge from active duty.

The North Putnam graduate earned his bachelor's degree from Indiana State University, his master's from Olivet Nazarene University and his principal's license and educational specialist license from Indiana State.

His wife, Melanie, serves as literacy coach at Warren Central Elementary School. They have three children, Morgan, a Seeger and Anderson University graduate who has accepted a math teaching position in Baton Rouge, La.; Patrick, a junior at Seeger; and Emma, a seventh-grader at Seeger.

"Because of the people and traditions of the school community, I am looking forward to being the superintendent of North Vermillion Community Schools," Nelson said. "I grew up and have worked my entire educational career in small rural communities where the school serves as the 'hub' for that community."

Nelson said being associated with the Wabash River Conference in various capacities the past 25 years has helped him "gain a great insight of the pride in which the families, staff and community members have for their school."

"I look forward to creating a strategic plan to continue with the past success and also help move the corporation forward to meet the challenges associated with a small rural school district," he added.
