County hoopsters to play in WVOA all-star game

Tuesday, May 31, 2016

Six Putnam County athletes have been selected to participate in the inaugural Wabash Valley Officials Association North-South All-Star Basketball Games on June 11 at Terre Haute North.

South Putnam graduates Jessica Modglin and Josh Stewart along with recent Greencastle graduate Paige Bragg will be competing in the games along with juniors-to-be Colin York of Greencastle, Jalen Moore of Cloverdale and Treyton Smith of North Putnam.

The weekend festivities will begin on June 10 with a banquet for all players at the Country Club of Terre Haute and will conclude with the games the following day.

The girls' game begins at 6:30 p.m. and the boys' game at approximately 8 p.m.

"As part of the WVOA's commitment to providing quality game officials to area high schools, the association wants to give back to the community by offering student-athletes scholarship opportunities to further their education," game director Jeff Gregg said.

During the banquet, four student-athlete scholarships will be awarded to deserving eligible participants. Representatives from corporate sponsors, as well as student-athletes and coaches participating in the All-Star games will eat free of charge.

The banquet will be a semi-formal event involving a catered meal, during which video highlights of each participating student-athlete will be shown. A special guest speaker will provide the keynote speech, and each head coach will make comments, during which time each student-athlete will be recognized and presented with his or her official game jersey.

Two scholarships will be awarded during the program (one male, one female).

All proceeds from ticket sales for the game will go into the WVOA Scholarship Fund.
