City Police

A 21-year-old Greencastle man received three citations following a Sunday morning incident in the parking lot at Castlebury Apartments.

Officer Zach Rhine cited Cody Westgate for driving with a suspended license with a prior offense, false or fictitious registration and no proof of financial responsibility following the 4:40 a.m. incident

Westgate was reportedly attempting to turn right into the parking lot in a 1993 Lexus as Herbert Debrew, 34, Greencastle, was attempting to exit the lot in a 2000 Dodge Stratus.

Officer Rhine reported that Debrew thought he was being blocked in by Westgate.

Both drivers then began to ram their vehicles into each other's car "in an effort to make space to enter and exit the lot," the police report stated.

Debrew was able to pull his car into a parking space but extensive damage to the Westgate car necessitated it to be towed from the scene.

Total damage was estimated at $1,000-$2,500.

Meanwhile, a traffic stop at 9:21 a.m. Sunday resulted in a 37-year-old Greencastle woman receiving a summons into court on the misdemeanor charge of operating a motor vehicle without ever being licensed.

Lisa Long was stopped on Maple Street and cited by Officer Brad Hiatt.

Sheriff's Department

Putnam County sheriff's deputies responded to 11 recent property-damage crashes.

* At 8:05 a.m. on Wednesday, Larry K. Huffman, 65, Bainbridge, was westbound on Main Street in a 2015 Kia Soul.

Huffman told Capt. Tom Helmer he was stopping for a stop sign at Locust Street when the vehicle drifted to the right, off the travel portion of the road, where it hit the stop sign post.

Huffman told Helmer that due to a medical condition, he apparently needs to give up driving.

* At 5:22 p.m. on Tuesday, deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash in Brick Chapel.

River D. Buis, 16, Greencastle, was northbound on U.S. 231 in a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am, preparing to turn left onto County Road 300 North. Leanne Whitt, 41, Greencastle, was southbound on U.S. 231 approaching the intersection in a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Statements from both drivers and a witness to Deputy Jeffery Freeman indicated that Buis began to turn into the oncoming lane when he realized how close Whitt's vehicle was. He then stopped and tried to back up.

However, Whitt was too close and could not stop in time, striking the right front of the Buis vehicle. This spun Whitt's SUV around, causing it to come to rest south of the impact point, facing northwest against a guardrail on the east side of the road.

Neither driver reported injuries.

Both vehicles were towed. Damage was estimated at $10,001-$25,000.

Freeman was assisted by Capt. Danny Wallace and Deputy Virgil Lanning.

* At 12:38 p.m. on Monday, Caleb M. Peters, 19, Otterbein, was northbound on U.S. 231 just north of County Road 900 North in a 2001 Dodge Ram. Monty D. Ewing, 52, Charleston, Ill., was southbound in a 2006 Freightliner Columbia 120 semi pulling a trailer.

Peters told Deputy Freeman that he noticed a vehicle stopped in his lane so he applied his brakes. This caused him to enter an uncontrolled slide and enter the southbound lane.

Ewing saw the pickup enter his lane and braked but could not avoid T-boning the smaller vehicle.

The impact sent Peters' truck into a yard on the west side of the road, where it came to rest on the drivers' side, facing east.

Kaitlin Hart, a passenger in Peters' vehicle, was airlifted to Indianapolis due to the extent of her injuries.

Peters was transported from the scene by ambulance with an arm injury.

Deputy Lanning and Capt. Wallace assisted at the scene.

Both vehicles were towed. Damage was estimated at $25,001-$50,000.

* At 8 a.m. on Monday, Rodney Stearns, 62, St. Augustine, Fla., was westbound on Interstate 70 near the 44-mile marker in a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu when he hit a deer.

Deputy Freeman estimated damage at $1,001-$2,500.

* At 2:53 a.m. on Monday, Deputy Mike Downing was dispatched to Interstate 70 for a vehicle that had left the eastbound lanes of I-70. Downing found a 2010 Ford Fusion registered to Jennifer N. Harris, 26, Indianapolis.

Harris was with the vehicle when Downing arrived and told the deputy that her boyfriend, Michael A. Franklin, had been driving. She said Franklin lost control of the car and left the south side of the highway, driving through a ditch and a small fence before coming to rest in a cornfield.

Downing estimated the car was 200 yards into the field.

Harris said that Franklin fled the scene for an unknown reason. Officers were unable to locate him.

The car was towed. Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

* At 5:47 p.m. on Saturday, Nancy M. King, 40, Cloverdale, was eastbound on County Road 800 South just west of County Road 700 East in a 2000 Kia Sportage.

King told Deputy Riley Houghton she was making a right turn in the road when she saw a westbound vehicle in the center of the road. She tried to get to the right to avoid the collision, leaving the road and hitting a utility pole.

The other vehicle did not stop following the crash it had apparently caused.

The car was towed. Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

King suffered minor injuries to her pinky finger and chin but declined medical attention.

* At noon on Saturday, Louis Dezsi, 79, Deerfield Beach, Fla., was southbound on U.S. 231 in Cloverdale in a 2005 Chrysler 300C. Adam A. Boswell, 18, Cloverdale, was also southbound in a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix.

Dezsi told Deputy Scott Ducker he was getting ready to turn left into the Cloverdale Car Wash when he was rear-ended by Boswell's vehicle.

Boswell told Ducker he was trying to go around Dezsi's vehicle but could not avoid the collision.

Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

* At 1:02 a.m. on Saturday, Jeral J. Baker, 32, Bainbridge, was southbound on Manhattan Road in a 1989 Chevrolet Beretta. He told Sgt. Kyle Gibbons he signaled his intention to turn left into a residence.

Kayleen N. Grable, 19, Brazil, was southbound directly behind Baker's vehicle in a 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse. She attempted to pass Baker's vehicle on the left as it began to turn left.

The two cars collided, with the right front of Grable's car hitting the left front of Baker's. Grable's car continued off the road and hit a fence.

Both vehicle were driven from the scene. Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

* Around 10 p.m. on Friday, May 27, Deputy Houghton responded to a pair of car-deer collisions in the same location.

Samuel A. Gould, 22, Greencastle, was northbound on County Road 275 East at County Road 350 South in a 2005 Ford Freestyle when he hit a deer.

Damage was estimated at less than $1,000.

The vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.
