County Jail

Nine people were booked in the Putnam County Jail recently.

* At 4:41 p.m. on Friday, Robert Tobin III, 35, Crawfordsville, was lodged at the jail on a warrant.

At 5 p.m. Eric Brooke Clodfelter, 32, Greencastle, was taken into custody for possession of a controlled substance and on a warrant.

At 10:31 p.m. Ronald Cupp, 53, Reelsville, was arrested on a Hamilton County warrant.

* At 5:22 a.m. on Sunday, Timothy Steven McCullough, 30, Greencastle, was housed at the jail for probation violation.

* At 3:35 a.m. on Monday, Jacob Tyler Wright, 25, Greencastle, was booked in for domestic battery and strangulation.

At 11:37 a.m. Richard James Thomas, 40, Roachdale, was charged with dealing in a Schedule I, II or III controlled substance.

At 2:39 p.m. Reece Montgomery Rouch, 24, Hartford City, was lodged at the jail for battery, public intoxication and disorderly conduct.

At 5:06 p.m. Nancy Marie King, 40, Cloverdale, was taken into custody for public intoxication and resisting law enforcement.

At 5:39 p.m. Darren Lloyd Cress, 45, Indianapolis, was housed at the jail for public intoxication and resisting law enforcement.

City Police

Greencastle City Police officers investigated a recent theft incident at the Walmart store.

Capt. Chris Jones was called to the store at 4:33 p.m. Saturday after a customer reportedly attempted to steal a pair of men's boots by using the old shoe switcheroo.

Michael Wallace, 27, Greencastle, allegedly tried to walk out of the store wearing a new pair of men's boots, valued at $45.98.

Police said Wallace took off his old shoes and put on the boots, placing the old footwear in the box and returning it to the shelf.

He was lodged in the Putnam County Jail on a theft charge.

Sheriff's Department

Putnam County Sheriff's department personnel responded to nine recent property-damage accidents.

* At 10:50 p.m. on Monday, Shelby M. Bass, 23, Brazil, was westbound on U.S. 40 near County Road 300 East in a 2005 Toyota Corolla when she hit a deer.

Deputy Riley Houghton estimated damage at $2,501-$5,000.

* At 4:24 p.m. on Monday, Nicole L. Johnson, 30, Fillmore, was northbound on County Road 775 East in a 2002 Mercury Villager. She told Capt. Tom Helmer she swerved to avoid a squirrel.

In doing so, Johnson lost control of the vehicle, leaving the right side of the road. The van continued sliding across the shoulder before hitting a grass embankment and rolling onto its driver's side. The van hit a tree and came to rest still on its side.

Johnson was able to exit the vehicle with only a shoulder abrasion. She refused medical attention.

Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000. The vehicle was towed.

Floyd Township Fire Department assisted at the scene.

Johnson was cited for driving without a license.

* At 5:15 a.m. on Monday, Melissa A. Jenkins, 43, Terre Haute, was attempting to turn left onto U.S. 231 from the Marathon Station at U.S. 40 and U.S. 231 in a 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora.

Jenkins told Deputy Jacob Harrington she believed she was signaled to go ahead and turn by a southbound vehicle stopped at the light.

At that time, David P. Smotherman, 49, Greencastle, was southbound on U.S. 231 in a 2014 Kia Optima. As Smotherman entered the left turn lane, preparing to turn onto U.S. 40, Jenkins crossed into his path.

Smotherman's vehicle made left front impact with the driver's side of Jenkins' vehicle.

Jenkins' vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

* At 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Kory T. Dirickson, 23, Greencastle, was northbound on County Road 700 West in a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze. Dirickson told Reserve Deputy Rick Lambert he had just left his parents' residence and was distracted by adjusting the radio.

The car crossed the center line and left the road on the east side. The car then plunged into a deep ravine and came to rest on its top.

Dirickson told Lambert he was shaken up but not injured.

The vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $10,001-$25,000.

* At 7:57 a.m. on Sunday, Reserve Deputy Lambert was dispatched to a single-vehicle crash on State Road 243 just south of County Road 1050 South.

A 2001 Pontiac Grand Am believed to be traveling southbound crossed the center line and exited the roadway, where it traveled approximately 300 feet before coming to rest on the east side of the road against an embankment.

The reporting party told the 911 dispatcher that the driver was seen exiting the vehicle and getting into another vehicle that had been following. Upon the arrival of deputies, the driver had not returned.

The car was towed in the interest of public safety.

The driver was determined to be Jesse L. Hemphill, 43, Indianapolis, who was charged with misdemeanor leaving the scene of an accident.

Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

* At 6:23 a.m. on Sunday, Scott B. Herrick, 48, Fillmore, was eastbound on County Road 200 North in a 2016 Ford Taurus when he hit a deer.

Reserved Deputy Lambert estimated damage at $5,001-$10,000. The vehicle was towed.

* At 3:50 a.m. on Saturday, Deputy Matt Biggs was dispatched to an overturned vehicle on County Road 200 North. Deputies found no driver on the scene and had the 2007 Chevrolet Aveo towed.

Later than morning, Biggs was contacted by Loren Hoopingarner of Brazil, the owner of the vehicle. He told Biggs the car had been driven by his son Lance M. Hoopingarner, 34, Brazil.

The elder Hoopingarner said his son was southbound when he swerved to miss a deer. The car then left the north side of the road and hit an embankment, flipping onto its top.

Lance Hoopingarner said he did not have a cell phone to call dispatch and got a ride from a passing driver, who took him to St. Vincent Clay Hospital in Brazil for unknown injuries.

Damage was estimated at $10,001-$25,000.

* At 5 a.m. on Thursday, Kiera N. Seitzinger, 35, Cloverdale, was southbound on U.S. 231 in a 2007 Saturn Vue when she hit a deer.

Capt. Helmer estimated damage at $2,501-$5,000. The vehicle was towed.

* At 3:47 a.m. on Thursday, William G. Snell, 37, Douglas, Wyo., was westbound on Interstate 70 in a 2010 Peterbilt semi tractor-trailer when he left the north side of the road.

The semi traveled down an embankment before flipping onto its side and sliding into trees.

Snell and three children traveling with him were all injured and transported from the scene for treatment.

Cloverdale Township Volunteer Fire Department and Care Ambulance Service were on the scene to treat the injured.

The semi was towed. Damage was estimated at $50,001-$100,000.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department recently responded to three dispatches.

* At 6:58 p.m. on Sunday, GFD responded to a fire alarm due to cooking at 106 Spring St. GFD reset the alarm and returned to station at 7:04 p.m.

* At 7:23 p.m. on Monday, GFD responded to a fire alarm at 508 S. Jackson St. but was unable to determine what caused the alert. GFD reset the alarm and returned to station at 7:31 p.m.

* At 9:37 p.m. on Monday, GFD performed odor investigations at two separate locations: first at the intersection of Locust and Howard streets and then at the intersection of Indiana and Hanna streets. GFD was unable to detect any gas after receiving reports of odors in the area.
