Tiger Cub girls best in WIC all-sports standings

ELLETTSVILLE -- Greencastle High School was honored as the Western Indiana Conference's girls' all-sports awards winner at the conference's banquet on Wednesday night at Edgewood High School.

Former Indiana University All-American running back Anthony Thompson was the guest speaker.

The honor was the first given since the WIC expanded for the recent school year to add Greencastle, Cloverdale, North Putnam, South Putnam and Cascade to original conference members Northview, Edgewood, Owen Valley, West Vigo, Sullivan, Brown County and South Vermillion to form a 12-team league with two divisions.

Point totals of two through 24 were awarded for placement for finishing last through first in either single-event individual competitions or in the series of "crossover" games for team matching teams with similar placings from opposing divisions against each other in a one-game playoff.

Greencastle's girls received a total of 152 points, with nearly half of those (72) coming in the fall sports season as the Tiger Cubs placed first in cross country, second in soccer, third in golf and eighth in volleyball.

During the winter season, Greencastle's girls were third in basketball and first in swimming, while in the spring season the Tiger Cubs placed ninth in softball, second in track and third in tennis.

Northview won the boys' title with 174 points and the overall title, with the Knights placing second in the girls' competition. Edgewood was second overall, placing second in boys' sports and third in girls' sports, while Greencastle was third overall with 274 combined points.

South Vermillion is leaving the conference, and will be replaced by Indian Creek.

The Braves are joining the WIC East Division, with North Putnam moving from the East to the West Division.
