Shades Chautauqua and centennial celebration this weekend

WAVELAND -- The fifth annual Chautauqua at Shades State Park, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 24-26, will coincide with a celebration of 100 years of Indiana State Parks.

Music, storytelling, hikes, food and more are planned for the celebration.

On Friday, musician Tom Rosnowski will perform at 8 p.m., followed by a campfire and s'mores.

Saturday offers the following activities:

-- 8 to 10 a.m.: Biscuits and gravy breakfast, sponsored by the Waveland and Alamo volunteer fire departments, with a free-will donation.

-- 10 a.m.: "Poker Hike."

-- 1 p.m.: Meet live hawks and owls.

-- 2 p.m.: Sousa-style music by the Lafayette Symphony Brass Band.

-- 3 to 4 p.m.: Hands-on activities from the early 1900s, including an "instrument petting zoo" with the symphony musicians; the magic of Marc Lehman.

-- 5 to 7 p.m.: Spaghetti supper with free-will donation, followed by acoustic music and stories with Jack Shannon.

On Sunday, Shades will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Indiana State Parks with the following activities:

-- 1:30 to 2:15 p.m.: Troy McCormick will share the entertaining and sometimes gory history of Shades.

-- 2:15 to 2:45 p.m.: Members of the American Legion re-dedicate the monument erected when they helped Shades become a state park. Look inside a time capsule placed under the monument in 1947, and then help fill another time capsule to be opened in 100 years.

-- 3 p.m.: Cake and ice cream.

-- 3:30 p.m.: Glamour Hike through the" Shades of Death" with guides donned in historic clothing and experience the stories of Shades by storyteller Rich Scott on the trails.

The programs are free, although standard park entrance fees of $7 per in-state vehicle and $9 per out-of-state vehicle apply.
