At 5:35 a.m. on Tuesday, a sleepy driver caused a four-vehicle crash on U.S. 231 south of County Road 700 South.

Bradley A. Barrett, 25, Indianapolis, was northbound in a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado. He told Putnam County Sheriff's Deputy Matt Biggs that he fell asleep.

Barrett's truck crossed the center line, first hitting the driver's side mirror of a southbound 2002 Ford Ranger. The smaller pickup, driven by Mark E. Smith, 57, Cloverdale, sustained minor scuff marks to the back of the mirror.

The northbound truck continued in the southbound lane, colliding with the left front of a southbound 2009 Pontiac G6 driven by Joshua D. Lady, 22, Greencastle.

This impact dislodged the front driver's side tire of Barrett's vehicle. The tire hit the front bumper of a 2006 Ford F150 that was following Lady's car. The tire caused heavy front end damage to the pickup, which was driven by Tyler A. Mayfield, 30, Brazil.

Lady was the only injured driver, suffering bruises from airbag deployment. He was assessed at the scene by Putnam County Operation Life, but his family took him to Putnam County Hospital.

Both Barrett's and Lady's vehicles were towed. Damage was estimated at $50,001-$100,000.
