Meet the 2016 Putnam County Fair Queen contestants

Six young ladies will vie for the title of 2016 Miss Putnam County Fair Queen on Saturday, July 16.

The contest will take place at 7 p.m. in the Fairgrounds Community Building. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $5.

WTWO reporter and anchor Cody Adams, a 2008 North Putnam graduate, will serve as emcee.


Rosemary Frances Hurst

Rosemary Frances Hurst, 19, is the daughter of Mark and Deborah Hurst. She has five siblings: Curtis Moore, 32, Jennifer Green, 32, Vanessa Boyd, 28, Christine Smith, 27, and Clayton Moore, 25.

The Greencastle High School graduate is currently transferring to Ivy Tech Community College from Vincennes University with a major in agribusiness management.

Her sponsor is Butler's LP Gas, W.C.V.S., K&K Construction and Chicago's Pizza.

Hurst was a 10-year 4-H member, having participated in the following projects: cat, ceramics, photography, sheep, swine, rabbit, dog, scrapbooking, veterinary science and cake decorating. She served as secretary in 2012 and as vice president in 2013, as well as president of the Rabbit Club from 2014-15.

Her activities include a church softball league, Sunday School, tennis, tennis management, football management, choir, singing, swimming, diving, hunting, fishing, camping, baking, gardening, animals, dog agility, horseback riding and ATV riding.

Hurst received the 4-H Tenor Award in 2015 and the Technical Honors Diploma the same year.

"Currently, I am enrolled at Ivy Tech majoring in agribusiness management with a focus on plant and animal nutrition," Hurst said. "After obtaining my degree I plan to use it to work as a seed consultant while furthering another degree at Purdue University to become a veterinarian technician.


Bailey Nicole York

Bailey Nicole York, 18, is the daughter of Roy and Malinda York. She has two siblings: Hannah York, 16, and Dustin York, 23.

York is currently a senior at Greencastle High School and is employed as a waitress at Jackson's Family Restaurant: The Double Decker.

Her sponsor is ITN Services.

York was a 10-year member of 4-H, having participated in goats, foods, ceramics, home environment, food preservation, scrapbooking, Junior Leaders, ATV safety, latch hook and drawing.

Her activities and accomplishments include the Top Notch Junior Leader Award during her first year in the Junior Leader Club, and she has been co-vice president of the group for two years while being selected to be Putnam County's Junior Director for 4-H camp in 2016. She also serves as secretary for the 4-H club titled Greencastle Stars and Area 30.

York's hobbies include spending time with family and friends, shopping, fishing, cheerleading, painting, eating ice cream, going on vacations and listening to music.

"I am going to be attending Wabash Valley College in Mt. Carmel, Ill., in the fall and will be studying early childhood education," York said. "After earning my degree, I plan on getting a job in the teaching field and start a family."


Lauren Elizabeth Johnston

Lauren Elizabeth Johnston, 18, is the daughter of Rick and Cammie Johnston.

The 2016 graduate of North Putnam High School is attending Purdue University with a major in agriculture education.

A 10-year member of 4-H, Johnston has participated in the Working Farmers 4-H Club, swine, sheep, baking, sewing wearable and sewing non-wearable, cattle, goats and consumer clothing. She was honored with the Supreme Showman title in 2014.

Johnston's activities include softball, volleyball, soccer, cheerleading and dancing and is a nine-time varsity letterman. Johnston was the vice president of the North Putnam FFA Chapter and was a member of the student council. She has helped deliver Santa's letters for elementary kids, has worked in the 4-H Junior Leaders concession stand and aided in the repainting of the Dairy Barn.

Her hobbies include mentoring, the county fair, spending time with friends and family, photography, animals and jokes.

Her future plans include attending Purdue University in the fall with a major in agricultural education and a minor in crop sciences.

"I plan to use this degree to come back to Putnam County to teach agriculture," Johnston said. "I want to be able to inspire my kids like my ag-adviser inspired me to do. In college, I look forward to participating in intramural sports and collegiate FFA.


Caitlyn Anderson

Caitlyn Anderson, 18, is the daughter of Scott and Dawn Anderson. She has one sibling in Kyle Priest, 25.

The Greencastle High School graduate is attending the University of Tampa in the fall with a major in international business administration.

Her sponsor is Rob and Jane Best of Dairy Castle where she is also employed.

Anderson was a 10-year 4-H member and has participated in swine, archery, shooting sports of all disciplines, photography and sheep.

Her activities include high school soccer, club soccer, swimming, French Club (for which she also served as secretary), Chemistry Club (president), Cumulative Honors, Archery Club (secretary and president), Swine Club (vice president), Shooting Sports Club and being the sound director for the Greencastle High School theater.

Her hobbies include exercising, yoga, reading, board games, card games, spending time with family and friends, meeting new people, blogging, working with animals, cooking, baking and online shopping.

Anderson's future plans are to attend the University of Tampa in the fall.

"I plan to attend the University of Tampa to pursue a bachelor's degree in international business administration and kinesiology with a minor in French," Anderson said. "(I plan to) travel when I'm young and be the pet parent of golden retrievers."


Michayla Gabrielle Sanders

Michayla Gabrielle Sanders, 18, is the daughter of Phillip and Michelle Sanders. She has three siblings: Benjamin Sanders, 27, Christin Sanders, 26, and Philisha Sanders, 16.

Sanders is a homeschooled graduate and will attend Ivy Tech Community College in the fall with a major in nursing.

She is currently an employee of Starbucks.

Sanders is a 10-year member 4-H member and has participated in sewing, photography, foods, fine arts and Junior Leaders.

Her accomplishments include the Top Notch Junior Leader Award, she was the state runner-up for Fashion Revue Formal Wear, she was a member of the Greencastle Stars 4-H Club and is an Ivy Tech student.

Her hobbies include spending time with family and friends, riding four-wheelers, playing piano, singing, sewing and working.

"I plan to attend college and receive a degree in nursing, and to start a family of my own."


Emma Marie Hiigel

Emma Marie Hiigel, 18, is the daughter of Scott and Angela Hiigel. She has one sibling in Cody Hiigel, 11.

Hiigel is currently a senior at Greencastle High School and plans to attend Indiana State University upon graduation.

Hiigel is a 10-year 4-H member and has participated in the goat club, scrapbooking, sewing wearable and sewing non-wearable, shooting, cooking and photography.

Her activities include Spanish Club, Key Club, National Honors Society, Latin Club, Teen Court, PIE Coalition, church youth group, soccer and cumulative honors.

Her hobbies include baking, crafts, shooting, ATV riding and dancing.

"I plan to attend Indiana State University to major in psychology and minor in criminology," Hiigel said. "I hope to then go on to graduate school and become and forensic psychologist."
