'Reparation' film wraps up remarkable run with Indy Film Festival award

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Putnam County-filmed indie thriller, "Reparation," has wrapped up its festival run by adding yet another festival win to its improbable streak.

Kyle Ham and Steve Timm's "Reparation," starring Jon Huertas (of "Castle") and Marc Menchaca (of "Homeland"), captured the American Spectrum Award this past weekend at the 2016 Indy Film Festival -- the first time a Hoosier film has won in the category in the festival's history.

It marks the film's 11th win in only nine competitive appearances -- an improbable run that includes Audience Awards at both the Austin and Sedona Film Festivals, the overall Best Film prize at Santa Fe, two Best Narrative Feature awards (Julien Dubuque and River's Edge International Film Festivals), as well as a near sweep of the Breckenridge Film Festival's acting and screenplay awards.

For filmmaker Ham, a 1994 DePauw University graduate, the recognition runs deeper than just laurels.

"This is a film we started writing 21 years ago, and never gave up on," Ham said. "It has been wonderful to see both audiences and juries respond so passionately to the film."

For filmmaker Timm, a DePauw theater and communications professor who resides in Putnam County, it's the best possible homecoming.

"This film's success is owed to the communities in Putnam County that helped make it. It means a lot to finish our festival streak by bringing home another win."

To help celebrate, the "Reparation" filmmakers will make a special appearance in the Putnam County Fair this Friday night with "Old Blue," the 1971 Ford pickup truck that was a centerpiece of filming during the Greencastle Farmers Market in 2014.

"We'll be in the fair parade with 'Old Blue ' announcing the dates and times, and thanking Putnam County for their support in making the film a reality," Timm said.

The film's premiere in Greencastle is set for Sept. 4-8 at Ashley Square Cinema (unless it sells out and they extend the run). Tickets are on sale at Ashley Square.

"Reparation" is a powerful suspense thriller about a troubled Air Force veteran who finds clues to his buried memories in his daughter's art, while confronted by a stranger who comes to town looking for answers. The film will be released theatrically in the U.S. in September.
