DePauw honors Eskew, Hasbrook award winners
Marcus Dozier of the track and field team and Alex Grissom of the swimming and diving squad have been selected DePauw's top senior male student-athletes by the University's department of intercollegiate athletics as co-recipients of the Phil Eskew Award, while Caroline Zadina of the women's soccer team,was named the recipient of the Amy Hasbrook Award as the top senior female student-athlete.
The Eskew Award is presented annually to a senior male student-athlete who best exemplifies effort and excellence in academics, athletics, leadership, integrity, dedication to the team, campus involvement and community service.
Dozier, an education studies major and art history minor from South Bend Riley, was a three-time outdoor NCAA Division III all-America honoree including twice in the discus in 2014 and 2016 and once in the shot put in 2016.
A 10-time all North Coast Athletic Conference performer, Dozier captured six conference titles with two each in the indoor and outdoor shot put and two in the outdoor discus. He was named the conference's field events MVP at both the 2015 and 2016 NCAC Outdoor Championships. Dozier was voted by the student body to serve on the DePauw Alumni Association Board and was president of the Wrestling Club. He also was named to the Dean's List two semesters.
Grissom, a geology major from Franklin, competed at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships all four years, earning honorable mention all-America honors four times in the 500-yard freestyle. He was a member of three all-America 800 free relays and one honorable mention all-America in addition to a fourth-place finish in the 400 free relay as a sophomore. Grissom was part of three all-NCAC 800 free relays and 400 free relays that twice earned all-conference honors. Grissom swam on the school-record 800 free relay that finished fifth in the nation in 2015.
A Holton Scholar at DePauw, Grissom earned the Trustee Award as well as the Evans Endowed Scholarhip, Dr. Charles Leonard Bieber Scholarship and Hugh Richard Gault Memorial Award. Grissom served as a team captain and first year mentor, while also leading Beta Theta Pi fraternity as its president. He was a three-time Dean's List selection.
Other finalists for this year's Eskew Award included Alec Kaczkowski (tennis) and Mitch Reavis (soccer).
Zadina, a psychology major and interpersonal communication minor from Loyola Academy in Glencoe, Ill., served as captain and was most valuable player of the 2015 team that won the North Coast Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships. She led DePauw to 12-7-2 overall record as the Tigers advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship for the first time since 2005.
Zadina, who scored two goals on the season, earned honorable mention all-NCAC honors in 2015 and 2013.
The Hasbrook Award is presented annually to a senior female student-athlete who best exemplifies effort and excellence in academics, athletics, leadership, integrity, dedication to the team, campus involvement and community service.
Zadina recorded the highest cumulative grade point average of any DePauw senior female student-athlete last spring and, as a junior, was initiated into both Phi Beta Kappa and Chi Alpha Sigma honor societies. She was recipient of the Charles and Frances (Wylie) Condit Science Scholarship for psychology in 2015 and was a poster presenter at the 2015 Midwest Psychological Association Conference in 2015 as well as a Prindle Ethics Symposium presentation winner in 2013.
Zadina was the team's representative to DePauw's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and, as a senior, served as a presidential ambassador and on the academic life committee. She also was DePauw's representative on the NCAC's Branch Rickey Mentor Program. Zadina served the community as a head coach in the Putnam County Youth Soccer League and participated in a three-week trip to El Salvador as part of DePauw's extended studies program.
Other finalists for this year's Hasbrook Award included Caroline Bridges (swimming & diving), Linsey Button (softball), Maryclaire Heldring (lacrosse), Abby Keller (basketball) and Keely McGrath (volleyball).
The awards are named for former DePauw student-athletes Amy Hasbrook '00 and Phil Eskew Jr. '63. Hasbrook was a four-year letterwinner for the women's basketball team who lost her life in a fire in 2002.
Eskew, the president of DePauw's "D" Association for over 20 years, was a 1994 inductee into the DePauw Athletic Hall of Fame and was instrumental in its formation in 1986.
