South Street improvements to continue east of Fairview

Tuesday, August 9, 2016

The City of Greencastle has announced that on Wednesday, Aug. 10, the South Street construction project work will begin east of Fairview Street.

As a result, South Street will be closed from Fairview Street to Zinc Mill Road.

At this time, the intersection of South Street and Zinc Mill Road will remain open. However, the intersection will be closed in the future for improvements to the intersection.

While work continues from Fairview Street to Zinc Mill Road, the following streets will be closed at or near South Street:

-- East Street.

-- Woodhaven Drive.

-- Millstone Point Drive.

The contractor, Reith-Riley, will maintain access for property owners, however, through traffic will not be permitted.

Neighborhood residents are asked to use an alternate route to avoid the closed roads.

The work on South Street includes utility relocation, storm water drainage improvements, installation of sidewalks, installation of curb and gutter and road reconstruction.

Completion of work by Frontier Communications to relocate telecommunications cables allows this next phase of work to start.

"The city greatly appreciates the patience and understanding of the adjoining property owners while these significant community and neighborhood improvements are completed," Mayor Bill Dory said.

The work is funded by the Indiana Department of Transportation with federal highway funds. Local tax dollars are being used as match for the federal funds.

Property owners are being notified by individual door hangars. Work will proceed as weather permits.
