Thursday, August 18, 2016

Greencastle's boys' tennis team opened its season on Wednesday by winning 5-0 at South Putnam, which was also playing its season opener.

The Tiger Cubs got singles wins from Jed Fajt, Sean Ramey and Yuji Mozawa plus doubles victories from the teams of Nathan Gobert-Elijah Lewis and Logan Wood-Jack Riggle.

Greencastle coach Kevin Rowe was pleased with his team's play.

"I thought the guys came out and played well," he said. "It was our first match of the season, so it took a game or two to shake the nerves. I am excited to see where we can go this year -- we have high expectations."

Volleyball

* Tiger Cubs sweep Athenians -- Greencastle swept visiting Crawfordsville 25-19, 25-17 and 25-16 for its first win of the season.

The Greencastle offense was led by sophomore Jada Amis with 10 kills and senior Lydia Trout with 13 assists. Jalyn Duff added nine assists, while Bailey Shuee and Madison Trout added six kills each.

The defense was led by junior Maggie Meyer with 20 digs and five service aces. Duff added 15 digs to help spark the defense.

"The Tiger Cubs did a nice job of moving the ball around on offense, and did a nice job of running plays in transition. Serve receive and defense are both currently very strong for the team. They are able to control the ball off a serve or swing, and that allows our offense to have options. The JV and varsity teams play at home next Tuesday night against Southmont.

Crawfordsville won the JV match by scores of 25-24 and 25-19.

* Clovers drop pair -- Danville defeated Cloverdale 25-7, 25-23 and 25-15 on Tuesday in Cloverdale's season opener.

On Thursday, Cascade defeated the Clovers 25-17, 23-25, 25-16 and 25-9.

Against Danville, Tori Combs and Justyce Monnett had seven kills each to lead the Clovers, while Kenzie Stoltz added four. Tori Combs had a block, while Hannah Rady and Payten Simpson each had four points, Stoltz had three and Lauren Meek and Justyce Monnett had two each.

Rady and Stoltz each had two aces, while Rady had 16 assists, Simpson had six digs and Hailey Thomas and Monnett each had four digs.

"Danville is a good team," Clover coach Kathy Moore said. "We didn't get off to a very good start in the first match. Much of that nervousness comes from being a very young team.

"We played much better the second and third sets and we should see steady improvement with every match we play."

The Clover JV lost 23-25, 25-17 and 7-15.

Cloverdale got seven points from Simpson, five from Rady and four from Meek against Cascade, while Rady and Simpson each had two aces.

Stoltz and Monnett had six kills each, while Combs had five.

Rady had 17 assists, while Thomas had six digs and Meek and Monnett had five digs each.

"We improved our play against the Cadets," Moore said. "Missed serves hurt us in the first set, but the girls fought hard and won set two. We struggled with our passing in the next two sets and that affected our hitting."

Moore is confident her team will improve throughout the season.

"This team has a lot of potential and will continue to improve. Learning how to be more consistent will be a goal for us."

The Clover JV won in two sets 25-14 and 25-14.

* Cougars fall to CC -- At Indianapolis, North Putnam fell to 0-2 on the season with a 3-0 loss to Covenant Christian.

CC won the games by scores of 25-10, 25-10 and 25-11.

"Covenant Christian had some really strong hitters and we continued to struggle getting to where we needed to be defensively," NP coach LeeAnne Bryan said. "We host a tournament this Saturday and from there we hope that we can walk away with the win that we have been working for."

Haley Abdon had two kills for the Cougars, while Bradi Gierke, Lyndi Parent and Carlie Bundy each had one kill. Parent had two blocks and Kenzie Young added one.

Golf

* Cloverdale 208, Crawfordsville 253 -- At Clover Meadows, the Clovers got a 48 from Abbie Speas for medalist honors to defeat the Athenians.

Abby Walker added a 51 for the Clovers, while Ambrie Kidder had a 53, Sammie Shrum had a 55, Hannah N ichols had a 63 and Kelsey Neer had a 67.

"I was very pleased with our score, especially with us having an off week where we didn't get to play or practice for two days due to rain," Clover coach Matthew Langdon said. "Abbie played well, and right now we have four or five girls shooting in the high 40s to low 50s which is where we want to be.

"That kind of competition is great for a team."

The Clovers will play next on Monday with North Putnam and Owen Valley at Rolling Meadows, a match that was postponed by rain from earlier this week.

"Monday will be our first opportunity to see how we do away from Clover Meadows," Langdon said.

* Southmont 247, South Putnam 259 -- South Putnam's Alicia Haywood was the medalist with a 55 as the Mounties defeated the Eagles by 12 strokes,

Anna Carrington added a 62 for the Eagles, while Reagan Ladd had a 70, Kristi Wood had a 71, Kate McCammack had a 75 and Leighla Hazlett had a 79.

Like most teams, the Eagles were unable to play or practice early this week due to the heavy rainfall.

"I knew going into the meet our numbers may be a little higher than our previous meet," SP coach Kevin Metz said. "However, the girls fought hard, even though they were disappointed in their play."

Metz noted that Haywood was not happy with how she struck the ball, but still played well.

"Reagan and Anna were both striking the ball pretty well, and I was pleased with their overall performance," he said. "Kate McCammack continues to be a ball of joy on the course and is one of the most positive people I've seen out on a golf course.

"Kristi and Leighla were neither too happy with their play, however, I see them striking the ball consistently," Metz added. "Had we not had four days away from the course, their scores, in my opinion, would have been a few strokes lower."

The Lady Eagles travel to Danville on Thursday to compete in a 3-way meet with Danville and Greencastle.

* Cougars battle Northview, Monrovia -- Although only playing three golfers, the Cougars were able to come in with the second and third lowest scores. Shay Ehrlich of Northview was medalist with a 45, followed by Emily Eltz with a strong 48 and Taylor Dixon with a 51.

"This is Emily's lowest score ever for the Cougars and best for the season," NP coach Linda Patrick said, noting she had only 15 putts. "She was much more relaxed and was more confident with her game after working on improvements in her swing.

"Taylor was playing bogey golf through the sixth hole and then ran into trouble gathering three doubles the last three holes."

Freshman Abby Simmerman played her second match for the Cougars, shooting a 60.

"Abby is finding high school meets are different from middle school," Patrick said. "Abby is tweaking her swing and stance and learning more about why a pre-shot routine is so important in getting you ready to hit a ball. I feel she will show quick improvement in the coming few weeks."

The Lady Cougars travel to the Western Boone invitational on Saturday.

Soccer

* Tri-West 4, Greencastle 0 (girls) -- Playing at Reavis Stadium on the DePauw University campus on Tuesday due to heavy rainfall, Tri-West scored two goals in each half to record the shutout win.

Greencastle's captain trio comprised of seniors Katie Kessler and Whitney Weinschenk and sophomore Erin Thomas led the midfield with four corner kicks and only one off-side ruling.

Goal keeper Claire Gillen had 14 saves for the game. Strong defensive play was brought to the pitch by sophomore Gretchen Weliever and junior Megan Friars.

The Greencastle team will play Monday at Crawfordsville.

* Greencastle 4, Monrovia 1 (boys) -- The Tiger Cubs started the season off strongly despite wet conditions.

Seth Nichols started the team off by taking on Monrovia's back line by himself, netting a great shot past the keeper, and assisted Evan Crowe on the next goal.

Crowe scored two goals, one coming from a cross from Ben Parsons. The boys dominated most of the time of possession.

The Greencastle junior varsity team also got the season off to a great start, beating Monrovia 4-0. Hector Lezama netted two goals and an assist, while Jacob Baker also added two goals.

Cross country

* Tiger Cubs delayed again -- Greencastle's only scheduled dual meet with West Vigo was cancelled on Tuesday due to work being done on the Tiger Cubs' home course.

Greencastle was scheduled to compete in the Terre Haute South Invitational on Saturday at the LaVern Gibson course in Terre Haute, but bad weather forced cancellation of that event.

The Tiger Cubs will try to open their season on Aug. 27 in the McCutcheon Stampede.
