Tiger Cubs, Cougars pick up county wins

Putnam County's four varsity volleyball teams paired off on Thursday night, with Greencastle topping Cloverdale and North Putnam defeating South Putnam.

* Greencastle 3, Cloverdale 0 -- At Greencastle, the Tiger Cubs swept the Clovers by scores of 25-13, 25-21 and 25-18.

Bailey Shuee led the Greencastle offense with 12 kills, while Madison Trout added seven kills.

Jayln Duff had 18 assists, while Maggie Meyer and Lydia Trout each had 10 digs and Mckenzie Woodall added seven digs.

For the Clovers, Hannah Rady had 11 points and three aces followed by Payten Simpson with five points, Kenzie Stoltz three and Lauren Meek one.

Tori Combs led the offense with 13 kills, while Justyce Monnett and Kassie Wade added three kills each and Simpson, Stoltz and Meek added one each.

Rady had nine set-assists, while Hailey Thomas and Simpson each had one.

Combs had four blocks, while Thomas and Simpson led the Clovers with nine digs. Stoltz added eight digs, Monnett had six, Rady and Combs each had five digs, Meek had four, Kassie Wade and Haley Maners had three and Kiley Shedron one.

"We played better for longer stretches of time against a good team," Clover coach Kathy Moore said. "Now we need to decrease the number of unforced errors and free balls. We will see them again in a week for the first round of the Putnam County Tournament."

Cloverdale won its fifth junior varsity match of the year.

* North Putnam 3, South Putnam 0 -- At Roachdale, the Cougars won by scores of 25-17, 25-12 and 25-18,

"The girls are playing well now," said Cougar coach LeeAnne Bryan, whose team is now over the .500 mark for the season. "We finally figured out how to transition into our defense defensive positions and the girls are working really well together as a team."

Lyndi Parent had five kills, nine assists and one block to lead the Cougars, while Haley Abdon had three kills and six digs, Aleah Duncan had four digs and five aces, Kenzi Young had 10 kills and one block, Brandi Gierke had seven kills and three aces and Ainslee Vogt had 15 assists.

South Putnam coach Rachelle Custis was happy with her team despite its defeat.

"The score didn't reflect our efforts," she said. "Our girls put forth great energy and effort and battled until the end."

Lillie Stein led the Eagles with four aces, while Ashley Schroer and Miranda Bieghler had two each and Caitlin Capps and Sabrina Phillips added one each.

Stein also led in kills with three, while Capps and Phillips had one each.

Bieghler had five service points, while Schroer, Stein and Phillips had four each, Capps had two and Drew Bratcher added one.

Schroer paced the Eagles in digs with nine, while Stein and Phillips had six each, Bieghler had five, Masey Chambers had four, Capps had two and Drew Bratcher and Hill had one each.

Bieghler had three set-assists, while Drew Bratcher had two.

North Putnam won the JV match 18-25, 25-20 and 15-10.

Aubrey Hill paced the Cougars with seven aces and 11 points, while Alex Bratcher led with two kills.

Jalen Hughbanks led NP with 11 digs, while Abby Teipen had two set-assists.

In other volleyball:

* Cloverdale 3, Turkey Run 2 -- At Cloverdale, the Clovers picked up their second win of the season on Tuesday by beating the Warriors by the scores of 25-13, 21-25, 17-25, 25-23 and 15-6.

Stoltz led the Clovers with 15 points, while Rady had 10, Combs had nine, Thomas had eight, Meek and Monnett each had four and Simpson had three.

Stoltz had a season-high nine aces, while Rady had three, Monnett had two and Combs and Meek had one each.

Combs had 14 kills, while Stoltz and Monnett each had seven, Wade had three and Thomas had two.

Rady had 24 set-assists, while Combs and Stoltz had three blocks each.

Combs had 11 digs, while Stoltz had nine, Thomas added eight, Meek had seven, Rady and Monnett each had six, Wade and Simpson each had two and Shedron had one.

"We played well," coach Moore said. "Turkey Run is a much-improved team and it was a battle throughout. I thought our passing was better and we had double the attack attempts because of it."

Cloverdale won the JV match in two games.
