County runners thrive at Northview
BRAZIL — Putnam County dominated the Northview Invitational cross country meet run at North Clay Middle School on Tuesday, as Greencastle’s girls captured first place and South Putnam’s boys tied for first place but were edged out on the sixth-runner score.
Greencastle’s boys placed fifth overall, while South Putnam did not compete as a team due to some absent team members.
Individually, Greencastle sophomore Emma Wilson and Eagle senior Kieffer Vittetow continued their winning ways by capturing both races.
“It was a solid day of racing from the guys,” SP coach Brandon Welti said. “The girls had some health issues and didn’t run as a complete team, but Maddie [McHugh] and Samara [Young] still raced really well..”
Welti does not think the boys’ team has put together a good race from all team members all on the same day.
“As usual, Kieffer and Logan [Vandermark] ran exceptionally well,” he said. “Freshmen Karl Egold really stepped up with a big race and got a PR.
“We know that we can do better as a team, and it’s just a matter of making it happen at the right time.”
The meet was not run in rainy or muddy conditions, but the thick grass on the course resulted in slower times than normal for many runners.
Wilson’s winning time was 19:58, while Vittetow crossed the finish line in 17:01.
North Putnam coach Kevin Lutes thought his short-handed squads ran well despite not being able to score in the team standings.
“I thought our Cougar ladies ran a tough race,” he said. “Taylor [Hensley] has been having some issues with her hip, and she just didn’t look comfortable.
“Sydney Sims did exactly what she was wanting to do — go out at a decent pace the first mile, then start moving up,” Lutes added. “She had a great race. Amber [Schubert] also has been showing improvement in learning how to compete by relaxing her arms and keeping her eyes up.
“Competitive racing is still pretty new to her.”
Lutes was also happy with the performance of his lone male runner.
“Kyle [Young] also ran well,” he said. “He had his best 5K time this season so I’m very proud of his performance.
“We were really focused on spreading his energy evenly throughout the race this time,” Lutes added. “I didn’t want him to save it all for a big kick at the end, and he did well.”

Golf
• Cascade 3.5, Greencastle 1.5 — At Windy Hill, the Tiger Cubs closed out the regular season on Senior Night with a match play outing against the Cadets.
“We decided to do something different,” Greencastle coach Robert Hedge said. “The girls played really well, and we had three different girls to score at least one birdie. It was a great night for our three seniors [Lindsey Bridgewater, Gabby Selvia and Alex Weliever].”
Hedge thought the seniors all played very well.
“We are looking forward to the county tournament on Thursday and the sectional on Saturday,” he said.
Rose White won her match and Weliever tied hers.
Macey Masten lost 3-2, Bridgewater lost 4-2 and Selvia lost 3-1.
• Cougars compete with WeBo — The Lady Cougar golfers finished their regular season on Tuesday at home against Western Boone.
Taylor Dixon was low scorer for the Lady Cougars with a 47.
Cougar freshman Jadin Nunez was able to drop her scores with a 66, thanks to her improved swing and being able to reach the greens quicker, coach Linda Patrick said. The NP coach also said that improved drives enabled Emily Eltz to pull in a 55.
“With the Cougars’ fourth golfer unable to play in the meet, the other players were able to have one last chance on the course to keep working on their games,” coach Patrick said.
“All Cougar golfers will be playing in the county and sectionals as they finish up their season.”
Coach Patrick said the players are going to have to really be at the top of their game in the next few days due to limited play in the last seven or eight days.
