IHSAA sectional play starts on Saturday

Girls’ golf sectional play begins on Saturday, with Putnam County teams going to two different events.

Three of the four county squads will travel to Brazil for the Northview sectional at Forest Park, while North Putnam heads north to compete in the Crawfordsville sectional.

Other teams at Northview besides Greencastle, South Putnam, Cloverdale and the host Knights are Rockville, South Vermillion, Terre Haute North, Terre Haute South and West Vigo.

North would have to be the prohibitive favorite, having set a school record in a recent meet with a team score of 149 — carding a 35 and three 38s.

For a point of reference, if the Patriots could repeat that nine-hole effort four times at the state finals their score would far surpass that of last year’s champion (Evansville North).

Putnam County meet co-medalists Macey Masten of Greencastle and Alicia Haywood of South Putnam figure to be among the hopefuls to advance to the regional as individuals if their teams do not qualify among the top three.

Others in that group of potential advancement include Cloverdale’s Abbie Speas and Abby Walker and Greencastle’s Lindsey Bridgewater and Alex Weliever.

North Putnam’s Taylor Dixon figures to be one of the top individuals at Crawfordsville. Other competing teams besides the host Athenians are Attica, Lebanon, North Montgomery, Seeger, Southmont and Western Boone.
