Monnett, DePauw Little State winners

Paced by Clauda Monnett’s winning performance and two other top-nine finishes, DePauw totaled 49 points to finish 19 points ahead of University of Indianapolis and win the little state portion of the Indiana Intercollegiates.

Monnett, a Cloverdale graduate, covered the 5,000-meter course in 19:17.23 and won the individual competition by nearly 15 seconds. Lois Miller was eighth in 20:29.18 followed by Becca Conley in ninth in 20:29.40.

Natalie Gruszka was 13th in 20:41.10 with Gabby Coffing finishing in 18th in 20:58.86, Haley Thompson placing 21st in 21:10.44 and Sarah Selzer finishing in 23rd in 21:17.42.

DePauw next competes in a dual meet against Rose-Hulman on Friday at the LaVern Gibson Course in Terre Haute.

Tigers improve to 2-0 —DePauw senior quarterback Matt Hunt totaled 400 yards of offense and led DePauw to a 35-24 North Coast Athletic Conference win at Wooster on Saturday.

The Tigers moved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the NCAC, while the Fighting Scots dropped to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

DePauw took a 10-0 lead in the opening quarter on Jason Kirchhoff’s 1-yard run and a 42-yard field goal from Marko Adams.

Wooster reached the board with 10:39 left in the first half as quarterback Gary Muntean scored on a 1-yard run, but the Tigers answered on their next series with Hunt scoring on a 1-yard run to make it 17-7 with 5:51 left in the half.

DePauw punter Hunter Sego pinned the Scots at their own 5-yard line with 1:42 left in the half, but Wooster drove 95 yards in nine plays with Muntean tossing a 10-yard scoring pass to Brandon Adams to close the Tigers’ lead to 17-14 with just 24 seconds left in the half.

Wooster tied the contest at 17-17 on its first series of the second half as Trevor Bowden booted a 24-yard field goal.

The teams exchanged punts the remainder of the third quarter before Kirchhoff pushed DePauw ahead on a 9-yard run with 13:52 left in the contest. Adams nailed a 25-yard field goal with 6:29 remaining to make it 27-17.

Starting on their own 28, Wooster quickly marched down the field with Brandon Adams scoring from the 1-yard line to make it 27-24 with 4:01 left.

The Tigers sealed the win when Matt Hunt scampered 50 yards on third-and-six for a score.

that extended the lead to 35-24 wit just 1:27 left.

Matt Hunt rushed for 121 yards on 18 carries and completed 32-of-47 passes for 279 yards. Kirchhoff added 69 rushing yards in 24 tries. Ian Good caught 14 passes for 123 yards and the 14 receptions equaled the third-most by a DePauw receiver in a game. Andy Hunt followed with 10 grabs for 85 yards.

Muntean had a big day for the Fighting Scots with 34-of-58 passing for 435 yards. Connor Allan caught eight for 166 yards.

Will Longthorne paced the DePauw defense with 12 totaled tackles including 3.0 for losses totaling 11 yards. Rocky Leffler and Chadler Nicholson had nine stops each. Nate Orrison led the unit with 2.5 sacks for 21 yards. In all, DePauw recorded five quarterback sacks.

Marcus Bowers paced Wooster with 15 tackles and Christian Golden followed with 13.

The Tigers outgained Wooster, 472-462 and held a 28-21 advantage in first downs.

DePauw hosts Hiram on Saturday at 1 p.m.
