PREP ROUNDUP: Lady Tiger Cubs split pair of soccer matches

The Greencastle girls’ soccer team split a pair of recent matches, falling 3-1 on Saturday to West Division champion Sullivan and defeating Monrovia 2-0 on Monday.

Against Sullivan, the Lady Tiger Cubs rallied together to play another strong defensive game against Sullivan, coach Angie Weeks said.

“With very muddy conditions the team was able to keep Sullivan’s attacks deflected until the second half,” Weeks said.

Claire Gillen had 18 saves and Erin Thomas secured a goal from an assist from Corinne Buchanan.

Greencastle and Monrovia were tied 0-0 at halftime, with both teams fighting hard to get a score on the board.

Tough scoring opportunities played out to finally give Corinne Buchanan the team’s first goal with an assist from Erin Thomas.

“Both Thomas and Buchanan have worked hard this season to get their connections down and the results are coming to the scoreboard,” Weeks said.

Thomas scored the team’s second goal with an assist from Whitney Weinschenk.

The team will play Saturday in the WIC cross-over game for third place.

Volleyball

• Terre Haute North 3, Greencastle 1 — At McAnally Center, the Tiger Cubs on the third set but could not tie the match in the fourth on Tuesday.

Terre Haute North won by scores of 25-10, 25-12, 23-25 and 25-11.

Jada Amis had nine kills and Bailey Shuee had seven.

Lydia Trout had 24 assists, while Maggie Meyer had 24 digs and two aces, Madison Trout had 15 digs and Sarah Miller had seven kills.

The Tiger Cubs will host Monrovia on Thursday.

In other volleyball:

Tri-West 3, South Putnam 0 — At Lizton, Tri-West defeated the Eagles by scores of 25-12, 25-18 and 25-8.

• Mounties sweep Clovers – On Monday, Cloverdale’s seventh-grade team lost to Southmont by scores of 22-25 and 9-25.

Ella Rightmyer, Veronica Carter and Michaela Phillips with three serves each.

The Cloverdale eighth-graders also lost to a very strong Southmont team in two sets, 12-25 and 12-25.

Leading from the service for the Clovers was Tiffany Wainscott with 6 serves.

The Clovers host Clay City on Thursday.

Tennis

• __Eagles drop pair — South Putnam’s Eagles dropped a pair of tough matches this week, falling 3-2 on Monday to Edgewood in the WIC crossover match for seventh place, and losing 4-1 to South Vermillion on Tuesday.

“This was another close match that we let slip away,” SP coach Johnny Briones said Monday. “I am still proud of how we are competing! No. 2 doubles and No. 2 singles did an awesome job of staying mentally strong.”

Cross country

Cougars compete at NV — At Cayuga, North Putnam competed in the North Vermillion Invitational on Tuesday.

Kyle Young was the top boys’ finisher, placing 33rd in 21:28, while Grant Jarboe was 46th in 23:53.

Taylor Hensley was 18th for the Cougars in the girls’ race with a time of 26:14, while Amber Schubert was 41st in 42:01.

“Kyle and Grant both ran their best tonight, as did Taylor in the girls’ race,” North Putnam coach Kevin Lutes said. “I was very pleased. We have a week now to get ready for county.”
