Hoosier historian bringing state’s bicentennial story to life

James H. Madison

As part of Putnam County’s Indiana Bicentennial celebrations, James H. Madison, a noted historian and award-winning author and teacher, will present a lecture “200 Years of Indiana History” at Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church in Greencastle at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27.

At the lecture, Madison will present some of the best stories of our past -- from the Hoosier pioneers who established a new state, through the disruptions of the Civil War era, to the 21st century.

His illustrated talk will highlight connections between the past and present and help Hoosiers think about the future.

Madison hopes the community comes equipped with thoughts and questions.

A reception with light refreshments will take place at the Inn at DePauw before his lecture and copies of his books will be available for purchase and signing after the lecture.

The reception and lecture are free and open to the public.

Support for this event comes from the Bicentennial Committee of Putnam County, DePauw University President’s Office and the Putnam County Community Foundation.

James H. Madison is the Thomas and Kathryn Miller Professor Emeritus of History at Indiana University, Bloomington.

An award-winning teacher, he has also taught at Hiroshima University, Japan, and at the University of Kent, Canterbury, England.

He serves on the boards of Indiana Humanities and the Indiana Historical Society and as a member of the Indiana Bicentennial Commission.

Madison is the author of several books including “Eli Lilly: A Life,” “A Lynching in the Heartland: Race and Memory in America” and “Slinging Doughnuts for the Boys: An American Woman in World War II.”

His most recent books are “Hoosiers: A New History of Indiana” for adult readers and “Hoosiers and the American Story” for young readers.

Most of us won’t be around for Indiana’s 300th birthday, so Putnam County’s Bicentennial Committee has worked hard on the bicentennial celebration.
