City Police

A reported shoplifting incident at the Greencastle Walmart store resulted in the recent arrest of a Putnam County teenager, City Police reported.

Ashley Mershon, 18, Greencastle, was lodged in the Putnam County Jail on theft charges after being arrested at 3:41 p.m. Wednesday by Reserve Officer Kenneth Shepherd.

Mershon allegedly took cosmetics, valued at $28.61, including lipstick and eye liner, along with a brush.

The incident was witnessed by Walmart loss prevention personnel and caught on video, Shepherd reported.

Two recent property-damage accidents were investigated by Greencastle officers.

• At 3:12 p.m. Wednesday, a two-vehicle mishap was reported on South Indiana Street near Park Street in the city’s South End.

Officer Nick Eastham reported that Amanda Branson, 40, Greencastle, was southbound on Indiana Street, driving a 2006 Chevrolet, when a 2012 Honda, driven by Cory Green, 26, Indianapolis, pulled out of Park Street in front of her vehicle.

Green said he did not see the Branson vehicle due to a fence on adjacent property.

Damage was estimated at $5,000-$10,000.

Green was cited by Officer Eastham for failure to prove financial responsibility (no insurance).

• At 6:23 p.m. Monday, a two-vehicle accident occurred on Indianapolis Road near Warren Drive.

Officer Brad Hiatt reported that James Stevens, 70, Greencastle, was eastbound on Indianapolis Road, driving a 1994 Ford. Approaching the stoplight at Warren Drive, Stevens activated his right turn signal an estimated 40 feet west of the intersection.

Joseph Lamon, 19, Greencastle, apparently thought Stevens was turning into Taco Bell, Officer Hiatt reported, and pulled his 2004 Ford out of the restaurant parking lot into Stevens’ path.

The resulting collision caused an estimated $1,000-$2,500 damage.
