Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies responded to three recent property-damage accidents.

• At 7:16 a.m. on Thursday, Capt. Tom Helmer was dispatched to State Road 42 near the Doe Creek bridge on a report of a woman walking in the middle of the road and at one time lying down on the bridge.

Helmer arrived around 7:30 a.m. and didn’t find the woman in the area.

At 8:05 a.m., he was called to Cloverdale Town Hall for a man reporting a property-damage crash. David G. Hieb, 74, Poland, said he had been northeast-bound on State Road 42 in a 2004 Chevrolet Impala when he ran into something.

After impact, he drove to the next road and turned around to see what he had hit. Hieb told Helmer it was still dark and foggy and he found nothing.

He then drove to Cloverdale and discovered the damage to his car after sunrise.

Hiebe then took Helmer to the scene on State Road 42 where they searched the shoulders and behind the guardrails but could not find what he had hit. They did find his driver’s side rearview mirror on the shoulder.

Whle Helmer was there, he was approached by Fred Fislar, who lives off of 42. Fislar told Helmer he had heard a collision earlier in the morning but assumed it was a dog because he heard a dog crying afterward.

He was a few minutes later a woman walked up the road with a dog, saying she’d been hit by a vehicle. Fislar said she was limping but refused medical attention.

Instead, the woman requested a ride to Brazil, which Fislar granted, dropping her off at an unknown address. He never got her name but said that she appeared intoxicated.

Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

• At 7:01 a.m. on Wednesday, David L. Swango, 54, Bedford, was northbound on U.S. 231 turning left onto the Interstate 70 westbound entrance ramp in a 2015 Ford F150. Jason A. Auterson, 36, Carbon, was southbound on U.S. 231 in a 2009 Chevrolet Aveo.

Swango told Capt. Helmer that as he prepared to cross the northbound lanes, he saw a vehicle turning right onto the entrance ramp but failed to see Auterson going straight. He turned into Auterson’s path.

Auterson hit the cargo bed of Swango’s truck. Impact spun Auterson’s car around and it came to rest in the southbound lane facing west.

The drivers and passengers were checked out by Operation Life with all five signing medical releases.

Cloverdale Township Volunteer Fire Department assisted with cleanup and traffic control. Also assisting were Deputy Scott Ducker and Deputy Matt Biggs.

Both vehicles were towed. Damage was estimated at $5,001-$10,000.

• At 12:25 a.m. on Wednesday, Chandler L. Souders, 17, Greencastle, was eastbound on County Road 300 South in a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire.

Souders told Capt. Helmer his right tires left the road and entered the grass shoulder, where he sidswiped a utility pole. He then drove another quarter mile east, leaving the road again before returning to the road and stopping.

He said his brakes failed after hitting the pole.

Sounders was uninjured but was covered in glass from the right windows shattering.

Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.
