SULLIVAN — The battle for supremacy in the West Division of the Western Indiana Conference was no battle at all.

Sullivan senior quarterback Trey Powell tied his school record of seven touchdowns to lead the Golden Arrows to a 56-7 victory over previously undefeated Greencastle at Sportland Field Friday.

Powell completed 16 of 24 passes for a 494 yards.

Junior Dakota Caton hauled in five passes for 143 yards and five touchdowns, giving him 12 on the season.

His first two scores capped drives of 80 and 74 yards as the Golden Arrows (5-1 overall, 3-0 in the WIC) needed just 95 seconds to take a 14-0 lead.

Zane Conner caught TD passes of 82 and 72 yards, both in the second quarter. Caton snagged his third TD of the half as Sullivan had a 35-0 advantage at intermission.

“To be honest, I did not expect it to be a blowout,” said Sullivan coach Trent Olson. “I thought we were the better team, but I was expecting anything like this.

“We have a lot of quickness out the outside. What you saw tonight was a product of what Greencastle played defensively. They brought a lot of heat. But Trey hung in there. We made some quick throws to take advantage on the outside. A lot of times Greencastle thought they had the angle on Dakota or Zane, but they were just too quick for their defenders.”

Greencastle (5-1, 2-1) did not score until both teams had their reserves in the game in the fourth quarter.

Chandler Souders capped an 18-play drive with a 3-yard TD run. The march consumed more than 10 minutes and culminated while Whitney Weinschenk booted the point after touchdown with 100 seconds remaining as the Tigers Cubs avoided the shutout.

Derek Ummel rushed 11 times for 75 yards and Devin Clar had 17 carries for 70 more.

Nick Costin completed 5 of 17 passes for 33 yards. J.T. Matthews had three catches for 21 yards.

Sullivan’s Wes Bedwell scored on a 15-yard run in the fourth quarter.

The Arrows rushed 17 times for 117 yards, giving them 611 yards of total offense.

Trevor Magill led the Arrows with 44 yards on six carries.

Greencastle had only allowed 60 points through their first five games.

Sullivan, winners of four in a row, will host South Putnam next Friday.

Greencastle will play the same night at home against Northview in another West Division matchup.

  • I have said for years now that our safties are too soft and improperly coached. Not one has been taught to turn to look for the ball when the receiver extends his hands to catch a pass. Sullivan is the first team to use this obvious weakness to their advantage. We're lucky that coaches of the other teams we play have not exploited this as well. The Cubs could easily be 2-3 right now.
