PREP ROUNDUP: Tiger Cubs capture invite; NP girls win in soccer

Greencastle's girls break out to a good start in Saturday's invitational.

Greencastle hosted and won the Tiger Cub Invitational cross country races on Saturday.

The Tiger Cubs got a second-place finish from Clayton Wilson to win the boys’ race with 42 points. Crawfordsville was second with 59 points.

Emma Wilson won the girls’ race in 18:29.8 as the Tiger Cubs scored 28 team points to 50 for runnerup Crawfordsville. The Tiger Cubs had three of the top five runners and six of the top 12.

For Cloverdale, Chad Stevens was 10th overall in the boys’ race in 18:19.4 and Rylan Hall was 20th in 19:15.

“Chad and Rylan ran well,” Cloverdale coach Andy Tyler said. “Elliott [Williamson] also improved his time.

“The new course was great,” Tyler added. “We could have had a little less humidity, but the team still ran well.”

Chelsie Edwards was ninth overall in the girls’ race to pace the Clovers.

“We were looking for a single digit finisher and she delivered,” Tyler said. “We are looking forward to the county and conference meets as the season comes to a close.”

In the elementary races, Eli Kelley of Cloverdale won the boys’ race and Sammie McCoy of Tzouanakis won the girls’ race.

Volleyball

Eagles second in tourney — At Mecca, South Putnam placed second in the Riverton Parke Invitational.

The Lady Eagles fell to Riverton Parke the first match by the scores of 12-25 and 24-26.

The Lady Eagles took the win against Broad Ripple in two sets with the scores of 29-27 and 25-18, and finished the day with a win against Eminence in two sets with the scores of 25-22 and 25-22.

“We made some changes in the lineups and the girls did well filling their role,” SP coach Rachelle Custis said. “I’m proud of the girls working together to get two more wins.”

The Eagles will host Western Indiana Conference leader Sullivan tonight.

Clovers second, third in county — Rallying back from a deficit, the CMS eighth-grade Lady Clovers defeated the North Putnam Cougars 25-18 and 25-24 in the semifinals.

Ashlynn Basore led the Clovers by hitting eight serves in a row.

Basore scored 15 points in the two matches and added three aces.

The Clovers were defeated by the Lady Eagles of South Putnam in the championship game in two sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-13. Leading scorers for the Clovers in this game were Autumn Lewellen and Alexa Wynia each with eight.

The seventh-grade Lady Clovers took third place in county on Saturday, losing their first match against North Putnam, before coming back to win the second against South Putnam.

Leading the Clovers in serving was Chloe Sprinkle with 11 total serves between the two matches.

South Putnam plays tonight at Cloverdale.

Soccer

Lady Cougars take third — At Clayton, North Putnam beat Cascade 2-0 in the third-place Western Indiana Conference crossover match.

Edgewood defeated Greencastle 3-2 in the fifth-place match.

In boys’ action, Edgewood defeated Greencastle 4-1 in the championship while Owen Valley downed North Putnam 4-0 in the seventh-place match.
