Football games can be decided by inches, but Friday night’s Western Indiana Conference football game was decided by a foot — the foot of senior kicker Ben Webb.

Webb knocked through his second field goal of the game with just :07 left to propel the Greencastle Tiger Cubs to a 13-10 victory over the Owen Valley Patriots.

“Thank you Ben Webb for two field goals,” Greencastle coach Mike Meyer said after his squad earned a third-place finish in the WIC. The Tiger Cubs finished the regular season 8-1 with their only loss at the hands of conference champion Sullivan.

“We really competed. We were 12th in the league last year, we are now third this year. The kids have done a nice job and come a long way,” Meyer said.

The two teams opened the game by making mistakes. Greencastle fumbled the opening kickoff and Owen Valley took their first possession in Tiger Cub territory, but it failed to capitalize. On the Patriots’ second play from scrimmage, Gavin Bollman recovered an Owen Valley fumble.

The Tiger Cubs took advantage of that mistake. Six plays later, Devin Clar opened the scoring with a four-yard touchdown run. Webb kicked the point after and Greencastle led 7-0.

The two teams spent the rest of the first half trading punts and turnovers. Greencastle dominated the game defensively in the first half holding the Patriots to just 43 total yards but offensively couldn’t take advantage and held the slim lead of 7-0 at the end of the half.

“Our defense had their backs to the wall all night. I thought the defense played well. The kids up front played well and our linebackers did some good things,” Meyer said.

The Patriots took the second half kickoff and mounted a short drive that stalled on the Greencastle 40-yard line. An excellent punt pinned the Tiger Cubs inside their 10-yard line. The Patriot defensed forced a three-and-out and took over with a short field from the Greencastle 37-yard line and scored four plays later on a Logan Trimble one-yard run to tie the score at 7-7.

Greencastle came right back. Clar returned the kickoff 39 yards and then picked up 30 yards rushing on the drive to set up the first field goal by Webb. This one was a 36-yarder to give the Cubs a 10-7 advantage late in the third quarter.

Owen Valley didn’t quit. The Patriots used a 12-play drive using up almost six minutes to tie the score on a Carter LaCoursiere 30-yard field goal with 6:58 left to play.

The Patriots used an aerial attack to finally begin moving the ball.

Daniel Burkett completed four passes for 72 yards during the drive.

The two teams then traded possessions before Greencastle took over near midfield with just under four minutes to play.

The game looked like it would go to overtime as the Cubs faced a third down and 23 yards to go, Clar picked up 25 yards on two carries, then picked up another 24 yards putting the Cubs in range for Webb’s game-winning kick.

“I thought both defenses played well. Offensively, we kind of struggled but Devin Clar, there wasn’t a whole lot of holes and he found them and ran hard,” Meyer said of the senior who carried the ball 28 times for 202 yards.

Owen Valley tried a desperation trick play, but the game ended with Greencastle claiming the victory in the crossover game.

“It was entertaining. It wasn’t pretty but we kept playing for four quarters. This time of year you will take a win any way you can get it. I am happy for our seniors to get a win in their last regular season home game,” Meyer said.

Greencastle will host WIC rival West Vigo next Friday in a Class 3A Sectional 29 contest. The Tiger Cubs won the earlier matchup 30-27.
