CRAWFORDSVILLE — Greencastle’s volleyball team has had its share of ups and downs this year, playing well at times and showing its youth on others.

More than half of the Tiger Cubs’ roster consists of freshmen and sophomores, and such inconsistency is not surprising.

The Tiger Cubs lost 3-2 to Frankfort on Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the North Montgomery Class 3A sectional, winning two of the first three sets but unable to come up with the deciding victory.

“We struggled to ever get in the flow of our game,” Greencastle coach Maggie Walters said. “We’re very young, and that showed tonight.”

Frankfort jumped out to a 16-11 lead in the first set, before the Tiger Cubs got a point on a sideout and sent Mckenzie Woodall to serve.

Woodall, a sophomore, served seven straight points — including three aces — to put her team up 19-16 with momentum on its side.

The Tiger Cubs’ fluctuations were typified over the next few minutes, as Frankfort got the serve back after a sideout and got seven straight points of its own from Carson Hackerd to take control and hold on for a 25-21 win.

The second set was played evenly until Greencastle had a 19-18 lead and Maggie Meyer stepped up to serve. Meyer served three straight points after a sideout to put her team up 23-18, and the Tiger Cubs closed out the set strongly to win 25-19.

Greencastle led for most of the third set, taking a 20-16 lead behind the serving of Lydia Trout and hanging on to win 25-20.

Set four was also played evenly to its midpoint before Frankfort’s Emily Michael served five straight points to put her team up 19-13. The Hot Dogs still led 22-15 before Greencastle put on a brief flurry, getting three straight points from Woodall.

Frankfort closed out the set to win 25-20, setting the stage for the 15-point finale.

The Hot Dogs took an early 5-1 lead, but the Tiger Cubs evened the score at 5-5.

Trailing 9-6, the Tiger Cubs got the serve back on a sideout and then got three straight points from Trout to go up 11-9.

Frankfort earned the next point and then got three more on serves from Ashley Timmons to go up 13-11.

Greencastle rebounded to tie the score at 14-14 with the serve, but the Hot Dogs picked up the last two points to win 16-14.

Meyer led the Tiger Cubs defensively with 41 digs, while Lydia Trout added 36 digs and Madison Trout had 26 digs and seven kills.

Sarah Miller added 11 kills, while Jada Amis had seven kills and Jalyn Duff made 39 assists.

The Tiger Cubs finished the season at 16-13, and will lose both Trouts, Miller and Gracie Foster to graduation.

“We had lots of ups and downs,” Meyer said. “But from where we started the season to where we are now is a great improvement.”

Lydia Trout reflected positively on the season.

“It was a tough loss,” she said, “but I’m so grateful to have played with these girls for four years.”
