Vehicle damages south wall of restaurant

The Greencastle KFC was closed Sunday afternoon after a Greencastle woman drove her SUV into the south side of the restaurant.

With an after-church lunch crowd gathered in the Bloomington Street restaurant, 72-year-old Bernetta P. Williams was attempting to park her 2009 Honda CR-V at 12:20 p.m.

Williams told Greencastle Police Officer Nick Eastham she was trying to park her vehicle and planning to use the sidewalk curb as a stopping point. Believing the curb to be higher, she instead ramped the curb and crashed into the side of the building.

There is no official parking space where Williams was attempting to park.

The impact heavily damaged the wall between two large picture windows.

No one was injured in the crash. One woman was sitting along the south wall and was checked out by Operation Life personnel as a precaution.

Initially the glass in both windows remained in place, with only the outer pane cracking in one of the windows.

However, both panes of the window subsequently broke during clean-up efforts by Greencastle firefighters.

Besides the efforts by firefighters, who remained on scene checking for further structural damage, a crew from 1-800-BOARDUP was on the way to cover the damaged window.

KFC was to remain closed for the rest of Sunday afternoon and evening.

Eastham, who was assisted at the scene by Capt. Chris Jones, estimated damage between $25,001 and $50,000.
