Downtown trick-or-treat to kick off local Halloween activity

Tuesday, October 25, 2016

The 2016 Halloween trick-or-treat schedule for Putnam County looks heavy on treats and light on tricks.

The annual downtown Greencastle trick-or-treat event, sponsored by the Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce, will kick off local festivities on the courthouse square from 4-6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28.

Local businesses and offices will welcome costumed trick-or-treaters during that two-hour timeframe.

Meanwhile, the fourth annual trunk-or-treat event, conducted by local law enforcement and firefighters, will be staged 4-6 p.m. Friday in front of the Greencastle Fire Station along Indiana Street in conjunction with the downtown event.

Likewise, Putnam County Girl Scouts all also stage their annual Trunk or Treat event Friday, Oct. 28 from 5-7 p.m. in the area in front of the bandshell at Greencastle's Robe-Ann Park.

Scouts also will be collecting donations of cake mix and icing to create "Birthday in a Bag" kits for the Putnam County Emergency Food Pantry in celebration of Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low's birthday.

Also celebrating Halloween on Friday will be the Putnam County Public Library with a 4-6 p.m. Halloween party. Wear a costume, observe some spooky science, and grab a book and some treats. Books donated by the Friends of the Library.

Meanwhile, individual Putnam County communities have established trick-or-treat hours for Halloween.

All community trick-or-treat hours will limit door-to-door activity to just the night of the holiday itself on Monday, Oct. 31.

Specified community trick-or-treat hours on Monday, Oct. 31 are:

-- Greencastle -- 5-8 p.m.

-- Cloverdale -- 6-8 p.m.

-- Fillmore -- 6-8 p.m.

-- Bainbridge -- 6-9 p.m.

-- Roachdale -- 6-8 p.m.

-- Russellville -- N/A

As is the custom locally, residents welcoming trick-or-treaters are urged to turn on their porch light during the appropriate period. Likewise, revelers are asked to skip homes not illuminating their outside light.
