Sheriff’s Department

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies responded to several recent property-damage accidents.

• At 6:49 p.m. on Wednesday, Mark W. Butler, 61, Harmony, was eastbound on U.S. 40 just east of County Road 800 West in a 2014 Kia Sorrento when he hit a deer.

Deputy Jeffery Freeman estimated damage at $1,001-$2,500.

• At 6:59 a.m. on Wednesday, Bradley Kruse, 57, Lyons, Kan., was northbound on County Road 150 West approaching Manhattan Road in a 2015 Freightliner Columbia 120 semi tractor pulling a trailer.

Kruse told Deputy Virgil Lanning he passed under a low-hanging tree, which struck his trailer and caused extensive damage.

Kruse continued until he found a safe place to pull off. He said his company, Rock Bottom Trucking, was making arrangements to retrieve the trailer.

Damage was estimated at $10,001-$25,000.

• At 10:19 a.m. on Tuesday, Kimberly Y. McFadden, 29, Greencastle, was southbound on County Road 175 East at County Road 500 North in a 1997 Dodge Intrepid.

She told Deputy Anthony Brown she was trying to adjust her lights and did not observe a slight jog in the road just south of the intersection.

The car left the road and traveled about 200 feet before stopping.

McFadden was transported from the scene with a complaint of chest pain.

The vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

• At 11:08 a.m. on Tuesday, Emily K. Jordan, 20, Poland, was northbound on U.S. 231 on Plessinger Hill in a 2008 Mitsubishi Endeavor registered to Regina Heagy of Cloverdale. William J. Dalton, 26, Bedford, was also northbound in a 2007 Mack CV Series registered to Turner Heavy Haul of Bedford.

Jordan told Deputy Elizabeth Campbell that Dalton was traveling well below the speed limit and she used the left lane to try passing him. As the two northbound lanes began to merge back into one, Jordan attempted to merge, hitting Dalton’s driver’s side door with the passenger side rear.

Dalton said he was in the right lane maintaining a constant speed when Jordan tried to pass. As she tried to merge, Dalton said he even crossed the lane to avoid the collision.

Both vehicles were driven from the scene. Damage was estimated at $2,501-$5,000.

Campbell was assisted by Lt. Donnie Pettit.

• At 8:52 a.m. on Monday, Qingsong Xu, 45, San Gabriel, Calif., was southbound on U.S. 231 going uphill toward U.S. 40 in a 2017 Freightliner semi tractor. Megan L. O’Daniell, 20, Carbondale, Ill., was southbound in a 1999 Volkswagen Beetle.

Xu told Capt. Tom Helmer that the Beetle spun around and crossed the center line, striking his trailer. O’Daniell said she had no idea what happened but she lost control and hit the trailer.

An investigation by Helmer, Deputy Scott Ducker and Cloverdale Sgt. Charlie Hallam revealed that an unknown vehicle had previously driven off the travel portion of the road, cracking the oil pan. This car then returned to the road and leaked oil in the northbound lane.

O’Daniell then ran into the oil and lost control, leaving the road and hitting a hole in gravel on the shoulder. It then returned to the road, spun 180 degrees and crossed the center line, hitting the trailer.

O’Daniell’s vehicle came to rest facing east in the northbound lane. It was towed from the scene.

Operation Life took O’Daniell to Putnam County Hospital for further examination.

INDOT assisted with traffic control.

Damage was estimated at $10,001-$25,000.

Deputy Jacob Harrington reported that Malicoat ran off the east side of the road, striking a culvert and losing control. It then struck a tree, where it came to rest.

Malicoat was entrapped and later transported from the scene with injuries. Harrington said an odor of alcohol was detected but no investigation was completed due to the severity of her injuries.

Harrington was assisted in his investigation by Deputy Houghton and Roachdale Town Marshal Mike Mahoy.

The vehicle was towed. Damage was estimated at $10,001-$25,000.
