Freda Mae Foxx, 88, Indianapolis, passed away on Friday, Nov. 4, 2016.

Freda was born Aug. 17, 1928 in Greencastle to Dee Scaggs and Minnie Lee Blankenbecker Scaggs. Her family was evenly divided between five daughters and five sons. Freda was the fifth of 10 children.

Preceded in death by six of her 10 siblings, she continued to enjoy the love and support of two sisters and a brother: Myrt (Mrs. Roy) Detro of Longview, Texas, Jean (Mrs. Russell) Foxx of Greencastle and Donnie (and Mrs. Betty Ann) Scaggs of Greencastle, as well as sisters-in-law Betty L. (Mrs. Arlie) Scaggs of Indianapolis, Roberta (Mrs. Glenn) Scaggs of Greencastle, Carol (Mrs. Junior) Scaggs of Greencastle, Betty (Mrs. Merle) Foxx of Greencastle and one brother-in-law, Carl Foxx of Portage.

Freda attended Greencastle High School.

On Sept. 27, 1946 she was married to Donald Edward Foxx. In 1948 they had a son, Steven, and in 1953 a daughter, Brenda.

Steven and his wife Sue Foxx reside in Indianapolis, as does their daughter, Elizabeth Foxx Mora, son-in-law Stuart Mora and Grandson Blaise Foxx Mora.

Brenda Foxx Lothman of Springfield, Ill., has two daughters, Jennifer Lothman Banks and Jessica Lothman Winters. Jennifer and her husband Oz Banks have two children, a son, Tye, and a daughter, Simone. Jessica and her husband Chris Winters live in Wauwatosa, Wis.

Donald was able to enjoy greeting his three granddaughters before his sudden passing on Nov. 21, 1985. Freda continued living in Greencastle and working at Kroger. Work was a big part of her life. Many customers became friends and the staff became an extended family.

She belonged to the Women of the Moose, American Legion Auxiliary, Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW and the Kroger Retiree Group. She was a volunteer at the Putnam County Hospital, worked at the senior center and community food bank and was a longtime member of Greencastle Presbyterian Church.

Those who know her best remember her for being an ardent walker. She and her walking buddies would log three to five miles daily (weather permitting).

Her silver white hair was always perfect. She would be embarrassed when people she didn’t know would stop her and compliment her beautiful hair. Deep down, however, her family knew she enjoyed the compliment.

Freda also had a passion for playing bingo and more importantly, winning a lot.

She always arrived early at church to take her place in the back two pews with her lady friends.

This loving person will be missed by many, but especially by those who called her Mom and Granny.

The family would like to thank Brookdale Hospice Caregivers who attended to Freda’s needs with love and compassion.

The family wishes to invite those who knew Freda to join in a celebration of her life on Saturday, Nov. 12 at Greencastle Presbyterian Church 653 S. CR 100 East (Round Barn Rd.), Greencastle. There will be visitation from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., followed by the memorial service at 1 p.m.

Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery.

Freda requested no flowers, however memorial contributions may be made to the music ministry at Greencastle Presbyterian Church, 653 S. CR 100 East, Greencastle, IN 46135.

Arrangements were entrusted to Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home.
