Tiger Cubs lead WIC all-sports race
Led by first-place finishes in girls’ cross country and boys’ tennis, Greencastle stands atop the Western Indiana Conference all-sports standings after completion of the eight fall sports seasons.
The Tiger Cubs also placed second in boys’ soccer, third in football, fourth in boys’ cross country, fifth in volleyball, sixth in girls’ soccer and eighth in girls’ golf.
Greencastle has a total of 124 points, leading second-place Edgewood by 10 points and third-place Sullivan by 20.
South Putnam ranks 10th in the standings, with its best effort being a second-place finish in boys’ cross country.
Cloverdale stands 11th, finishing sixth in both football and girls’ golf, while North Putnam is 12th. The Cougars had their best finish in girls’ soccer, placing fourth.
South Putnam participated in six of the eight fall sports, while North Putnam fielded a full team in five sports and Cloverdale competed in four sports with full teams.
Greencastle is first in the boys’ standings with 70 points, while Brown County is second at 50.
In girls’ sports, Edgewood ranks first witih 70 points. Greencastle is the top Putnam County school in fourth with 54.
Conference newcomer Indian Creek is eighth in the overall standings, tied for third in the boys’ standings and eighth in the girls’ rankings.
Teams in cross country and golf are awarded points based upon the final standings of the county meets.
The remaining sports are separated into divisions, and final standings are determined by “crossover” games matching teams against teams finishing in the same position in the opposing division.
Schools who do not field full teams receive a score of zero.
The five winter sports are boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball, wrestling, girls’ swimming and boys’ swimming.
